Doctors don't seem too worried !!!!!

My husband has been going through hell the past 6 months and all the dr's he's seen has drop the ball and act as though he's just another number on their chart. The E.R. is the same way.He has Colitis and Gastritis but his GI dr. must not think it's important to treat either one.We have talked to his family dr. & she said she wanted another ultrasound,2 weeks ago and no call yet to set it up,I called myself to set it up & they thought I was calling for results, and was going to set me up with a new GI dr. 2 weeks ago,no word yet,I called and they had forgot.Come on people.Meanwhile my husband is laying around in pain getting worse. One good thing is he's in the process of being transferred to Louisville Ky but takes 6-8 weeks to get in.And the thing that gets me is the dr.'s there are going over his medical records first to see just how quick he can get in,and half of them are absolutely wrong. When we got them and read over them I couldn't believe my eyes.My hope is that noone else has to go through all this headache.

Jonna, call your doctor and get copies of the colonoscopy report and the pathologist's report. You're entitled to them and you should get them and read through. In the future, ask for a copy of every report. One of the problems that can crop up is just what you're running into - not everything is relayed to the patient. Don't ever assume no news is good news - get copies of everything.

There are several different forms of colitis, so you need to find out what the pathologist 'suspects.' It will be up to the doc to make a final determination based on all the results, but at least you'll have basic knowledge if you read the results.

With gastritis, you're typically looking at something like acid reflux, so he should be following a GERD-friendly diet and probably be on acid suppression meds. Your family doc should be able to start at least that much of it. So call and ask that to be done. You can find examples of a GERD diet at gicare.com - look under the 'diet' section. Get that started even if he isn't on meds.

First of all thank you for responding. You are right about doctors, and I'm getting alot of useful info from the internet, which is a shame because the docs should be answering our questions, but anyway, all I know about the Colitis is that it's more in the rectum. That info did not come from the doc that did the colonoscopy and found it but from another who had read through his records. As I said before,we found out he had it after getting the papers they give you after a colonoscopy, the doc never said a word about that or gastritis. So he is not getting treated for either one,he had the colonoscopy in Aug.His family doc is the one supposed to be transferring him to another GI,been about 2 weeks and no word from that yet.And believe me,his family doc and her nurse drop the ball alot,we're not the only patients who have noticed. We have never been sat down and had anything explained to us about colitis or gastritis. What I know I've found online. He has terrible upper right stomach pain, swollen stomach, diarrhea with mucas, blurry vision, lower back pain, pain in neck and shoulder, fatigue, loss of appetite, plus a few more symtoms. So anything anyone can tell us about colitis or gastritis would be very appreciated.Thank You

Jonna, docs can be difficult to deal with at times and it's very frustrating. What form of colitis does your husband have? Is he on PPI therapy for the gastritis? Is he following a GERD friendly diet and has he made lifestyle changes?

Welcome to the gastroenterology community!  Thank you for sharing your story.  Sadly, I cannot recommend anything for you to do besides finding a GI doctor that will actually listen to you and your husband.  Just keep on looking for one that will help you.  Good luck.
