bleeding ulcer

My husband has had an ulcer for 18 years. This past week, he has stopped havng the usual symptoms (acid burn, vomiting) He has also had bad stomach pains and increased stool that is black.

he couldn't get in to see his regular dr, so we went to a walk in clinic. The dr there took a stool sample and said it had blood and he needed to be admitted to the hospital immediately.

He refused to go, instead he waited 2 days to see his regular dr. When we went to the regular dr, all he did was blood tests and gave him a stronger rx for acid pills and sent him home and told him to come back next week.

If his ulcer is bleeding, can acid meds fix it?

thanks Mammo.

I am trying to get him to take this seriously and the more I try to explain it to him, or prompt him to go to the hospital, the more he gets angry and tells me to quit bugging him about it.

now that his dr blew it off too, i'm afraid I will end up having to call 911 one day :(

Black stool is indicative of an upper GI bleed, and your husband has got to take this seriously!  It doesn't sound like much has been done to cure the ulcer, just mask the symptoms.  His GP is not qualified to handle this situation, only a Gastroenterologist can help him.  An ulcer is like a crater and if left untreated it will eat right thru the stomach creating a fatal situation.  The ulcer itself needs to be addressed not the symptoms.  Your husband should have taken the clinic's advice.  This is nothing to fool around with.  Take care...
