Hi! Why are carrots bad for UC? My 16 y/o son recently diagnosed with UC. He is on mesalamine and prednisone but keeps bleeding although stools are better. His diet at this point consists only of chicken, ground turkey, white rice, low fat tortillas and some cooked canned carrots and muscle milk drink plus water, gatorade and probiotics. He has a lot of severe food allergies which complicate diet.  He is losing weight and he is an an athlete so this is disconcerting of course to him.. But he is also concerned that bleeding continues after treatment with meds. I know everyone is different wrt diet and UC but are carrots bad and does anyone have advice for keeping muscle mass during a flare... This disease is awful.. I had lymphocytic colitis 5 years ago and was cured.. but UC is a different animal:(((  any advice appreciated. Thank you   sorry so long...

It couldn't hurt to try the homeopathic route before making decisions.  I didn't get a choice on surgery since I perforated but it ended up being a wonderful solution for me.  It is heaven since surgery is a cure.  I adapted well to the J pouch and after almost 17 years am very happy I had it done.

I have UC and am on remission for lymphoma.  GI doctor states that since I cannot continue on prednisone forever, the only alternative is for me to be on an immune suppressant (which might bring the lymphoma back), or surgery.  Both are bad.  I've heard two testimonies of people with real bad UC whom have gone to hemeopathic medicine doctor and both have been cured.  I intend to go to one.  I will also try that fish oil capsules...won't hurt.

Thanks, Joe

Hi Ayri.  My son will be 23 in December.  He is on prednisone right now and they are planning on putting him on an immune suppressant.  I will mention the the fish oil to him.

Thanks, Trudie

I'm so sorry you're going through this.  I had UC for ten years and then my bowel perforated and I required a colectomy.  A year later I had the J-Pouch surgery and have done very well since - 15 years.  Are you going to be having that as your next step?    Yes, UC is nasty.  My son is now suffering from it too.

It will get better.  Did your doctor send you home with any prescriptions?  Drugs like Loperamide can help with the spasms and diarrhea.  Gravol will help with the nausea.  Once it gets under control you can then take Immodium.  Did they have a nutritionist talk to you?  Carrots are a bad one to be eating right now unless they are very well cooked.  Try eating things like oatmeal, marshmallows, apple sauce, and rice.  These are mild on your system but will also help to bulk your stools without the aggravation that high fiber foods can give.

Do call your doctor.  You don't need to feel like this.
