i am physically unable to burp.

All my life i have been unable to burp. I have these awful embarrassing involuntary gurgles that are sometimes loud and others not as loud. As long as i could remember, i have felt bloated after i eat too much or drink anything. Many people have tried to teach me how to burp but i simply cant. Almost everytime i yawn though, i always seem to let out a tiny burp or maybe a gurgle and i feel a little relief. i have noticed i yawn a lot more than other people, maybe this is a way my body tries to get out the access air. I hardly throw up or get sick. I have thrown up maybe seven or eight times in my life and i am 17 now. I do remember everytime i throw up i belch really loud before doing so. It sounds horrific and i have never heard anyone burp the way i do when i am sick. No one believes i cant burp, even the people who have heard my gurgles. My mothier thinks i am weird and refuses to take me to any kind of docter because she thinks i am making this up. i am afraid that if i dont get help soon i might just blow up. Recently, i was curious if i was the only one with this problem so i did some research online. I have come to find that many people have experienced what i have but i have heard nothing about a cure or a name for this problem. If someone has an answer or the same or similar problem, please let me know (:

thank you so much,
paige.

Does the magnesium allow you to burp? My 10 yr old has this same issue and doctors are not listening. They just keep trying different acid reflex medications.

Someone else mentioned this further up but after doing some research I think most of us have Schatzki ring. Which is a ring of muscle tissue in the lower esophagus. Symptoms include inability to burp, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing. No one has really mentioned the swallowing bit but the rest is spot on. You can ask your doc to do a barium swallow test for an accurate diagnosis.

OMG I really believed I was the only one with this problem! I have had it for 7 years now and it really interferes with my daily life. I have had all types of tests from Gastoscopys, CT Scans, 24 HR PH test etc and they all come back normal. I cant burp either and I have vomited maybe twice in my life, im 26. Is this a dangerous issue?? Please help

Wow, I finally decided to look this condition up after having it for 30 years and am surprised by how many sufferers there are! I'd never looked it up or asked the doctor about it as I'd accepted it as part of life, but thinking back on it now it has made me miserable quite often. People don't understand how painful and uncomfortable it can be - sometimes I wish I could cut a hole in my stomach to release the gas! And I also have a family member who has tried teaching me to burp and shows off how easy it is. It's especially bad if I eat a large amount or if I have a cold because of the constant swallowing of the mucus. Therefore having a cold is even worse and I normally have to be off work when I have one (but it's also because I work in healthcare and it's not encouraging to patients). The only things that help are the frequently mentioned induced gagging and lying down flat.

One thing I've found helps, apart from the induced gag reflex/air vomiting which I've never had to courage to do in a public toilet, is domperidone. It's also known as Motilium, and it's a drug which speeds up the emptying of the stomach. I think it may the the medicine that nkrumah is referring to above. It used to be sold over the counter in the UK for bloating and nausea but was removed because of fears about cardiac side effects, and because of this I think it's not readily available in the US. It really helps if I take it before a situation that can cause the huge air build up e.g. if I have a cold coming on, or if the air has not gone away after a few days. I'm quite lucky in that because I'm a pharmacist, I've been able to get a doctor to prescribe it for me despite taking it out of the product license because she trusted my professional opinion (even then she only prescribed the bare minimum and quite rightly). It's not recommended for use in bloating at all now, although it still may be in your country. You could speak to your doctor and discuss the possibility of taking domperidone as a trial if the bloating seriously affects your quality of life. It can't be taken if you have any sort of heart condition, heart rhythm problems or are taking a drug which could affect the heart rhythm, but hopefully your doctor can go through any potential risks to benefits of you taking the drug by going through your medical history. The doctor may very well not prescribe it because of the restrictions, but some of you sound like you're at the end of your tether so it's worth asking at least! It could make a massive difference to those who are really suffering, as some of you seem to be.

Found 75% Cure
To me the doctors are not aware of this problem, I have been struggling with it for over 20 years in that time I have been to about five GI doctors and three general doctors.
I have had every test known upper GI three colonoscopy not one Dr has any idea of what's wrong with me, I thought that I was going crazy, into I stumble upon this web site I cannot fart or burp my stomach bloats up like a balloon and I feel fatigued going to the bathroom is difficult at my house or squeeze like spaghetti.
After reading posts on this site I figured out that it is a spasm of the colon and esophagus I demanded that my new doctor give me some medicine call Docycline 10 Mg capsules, I looked up on the net for colon spasm now I feel 65 to 75 percent relief Thanks GOD and thank you guy.

After reading the threads it seems to be age groups from early childhood to late 30's for most of us with symptoms. I am 30 and have uncomfortable bloating in lower stomache with the "gurgling" feeling like air bubbles are shooting through me. Burpping is more strenuous then it should be and sometimes no burp at all! I have noticed certain triggers that spark the symptoms for me.
Stress, Smoking, Greasey foods, Yelling, Tight clothes,
I have noticed that i feel completely normal when im having a good time with friends so im thinking stress is a major factor. I have three small children that cuase me stress but i still love them i just wish i didnt have to feel like this just to be a dad. Anyways on to my self help techs.

Lower stress this will help. Do something outside with a friend or family member will take your mind of it.

Stop smoking or cut down on cigarettes. Smoking adds to my bloated feeling. I recently switched to a vapor pen and it helps.

Soda pop. Pop helps me get a satisfying burp only if i drink it out of the bottle and then its only certain soda pops that do it. A&W, Sprite and cherry Pepsi will give me a decent release that will almost make my eyes water. Soda to stay away from would be pops like Mt Dew. Mt actually makes it worse on me. Please try these you might get some relief.
