i am physically unable to burp.

All my life i have been unable to burp. I have these awful embarrassing involuntary gurgles that are sometimes loud and others not as loud. As long as i could remember, i have felt bloated after i eat too much or drink anything. Many people have tried to teach me how to burp but i simply cant. Almost everytime i yawn though, i always seem to let out a tiny burp or maybe a gurgle and i feel a little relief. i have noticed i yawn a lot more than other people, maybe this is a way my body tries to get out the access air. I hardly throw up or get sick. I have thrown up maybe seven or eight times in my life and i am 17 now. I do remember everytime i throw up i belch really loud before doing so. It sounds horrific and i have never heard anyone burp the way i do when i am sick. No one believes i cant burp, even the people who have heard my gurgles. My mothier thinks i am weird and refuses to take me to any kind of docter because she thinks i am making this up. i am afraid that if i dont get help soon i might just blow up. Recently, i was curious if i was the only one with this problem so i did some research online. I have come to find that many people have experienced what i have but i have heard nothing about a cure or a name for this problem. If someone has an answer or the same or similar problem, please let me know (:

thank you so much,
paige.

Me too.....I am the same.  I am 41 and have never been able to burp.  However, at the most bizarre times, like when I am talking or in the middle of eating a burp will appear from nowhere!  Which is really embarrassing.  For too long I have had symptoms of Acid Reflux.  Probably in 1998 it became the bain of my life, anything and everything I ate, I would feel bloated and need to relieve the feeling of trapped wind.  I too used to put my fingers down my throat, where (excuse me if this is vile) but would have a lot of mucus come up and air.  It got so bad, then all of a sudden it disappeared.  It then came to a point where I felt full after two mouthfuls, so now I eat little but often and that seems to help.  However the last 12 months I have the feeling of trapped wind, so much that when I have eaten I feel I cannot breathe and need to let out air, I will chew an antacid and I get instant relief.
Doctors have been inconclusive, so I have just had to deal with it in my own way.

It is great that I am not the only one with this.

So thank you all for sharing this

I have all the same symptoms.  I do exactly like miimoo does, except I don't stick my finger down my throat.  I'm able to make myself throw up the air.  The sound of the air coming out is crazy but what a relief when it does.  I also can't lay on my left side too close after eating or I get that gurgling.  I have a theory... I'm also very gassy (farty) and I just figure that since I cat burp that maybe that's why I'm gassy.  The air has to go somewhere.

I have the same issues that everyone has stated. I am actually at the point of giving up beer and carbonated drinks altogether. I really wish someone would figure out a cure for this. I have not tried the finger in the throat yet, but would hate to have to do that every time I feel the pressure build up. Please post all of your solutions as being unable to burp is such a bigger deal than people think.

Thanks

My boyfriend has the same problem as you and he was born premature! Must be something to do with not fully developing I think

Hello everyone,

Posting all the way from Scotland here as I also have every symptom that you mention. I totally understand how embarrassing the noises are when sticking my fingers down my throat to release gas/air.

I am visiting my doctor on Monday to have a serious talk about how we can get to the bottom of this.

I will keep everyone posted.

I am the mother of a 2 yr old adopted child who cannot burp on his own.  He was never held much as an infant so there seems to b a hiccup somewhere.  His bowels work well so it's the upper.  You all r giving me some hope.  We don't have a child's gastro doc here but I'm gonna request he see one.  The screaming fighting and pain is horrible and breaks my heart to see him go through it!   Thank u for putting your stories online!
