Amnesia after head trauma?

My girlfriend fell down 17 stairs and knocked unconscious on thanksgiving and was in a head trauma unit. She's been out since friday, but sleeping all the time. When she finally came to, she no longer remembers that I am her boyfriend, she thinks she is still in a relationship with her ex. I am truly devastated by this, is there any hope she will remember me and the things we had done?

Thanks for the input, the hardest part is that her mom and sister don't like me and have convinced her that she is still with her ex, and he's going along with it like nothing ever happened. Oh well, thanks again, and hopefully once the brain swelling goes down she may remember.

Yes - I agree!!  Be patient - it took me 5 years to recover, and I still can't remember anything substantial of my life before I was hurt (when I was 15).  She should be alright after she has recovered for a few weeks - by then you should know

Good luck and God Bless

Oh my goodness. I am so so sorry Harris28, this can't be easy. She's a lucky girl to have you sticking beside her the whole time.
It is not unusual for a head injury to cause some form of memory loss, and this is because these particular brain cells have been damaged as well. The body heals in miraculous ways and it IS possible for your girlfriend to regain her memory, and for these brain cells to be repaired. It will take time, and this will definitely be a test of patience for the both of you. As long as it is not a brain disease (like Alzheimers, for example) it is possible.
When she's rested and is has digested the accident, she might be more willing to try trigger her memory. She is probably feeling quite frightened right now and doesn't want to be pushed into too much too soon.
My suggestion would be to show your devotion and patience by sticking by her through her recovery, and do some research on head trauma/memory loss for a better understanding of what to expect.

All the best and stay strong.
