Equivocal Diagnosis for Symptoms

My former husband and daughter returned from a trip to Japan a week ago today.  The ex started having abdominal pains, which he described as cramplike in nature, the night of their return to the States.  It was episodic, not constant, and moving around seemed to provide a little relief.  He ignored it until Sunday morning 1:00 a.m. when the pain became too severe and went to the ER for assistance.  He was given an antispasmodic and pain medication.  It was not appendicitis, of course.  The pain continued.  Fecal sample was negative for parasites.  His doctor took urine, blood, and had a CT scan performed yesterday.  The WBC was "slightly elevated", as it was a year ago, and lymph nodes in his abdomen were slightly enlarged.  His abdomen was tender to pressure in one location yesterday.  No evidence of tumors, IBC and diverticulitis were ruled out.  Dr. stated it was probably a viral infection and he should have full relief within two weeks of the onset.  "Slightly elevated" WBC in two concurrent blood tests a year apart struck me as particularly odd.  He is on no medications, is 50 years old, and in general good health.  Does this occur naturally in some people?  What tests should be performed if the pain has not resolved itself by next Thursday?
