How often is too often?

For the last three months I've been suffering from very frequent headaches. I've had a headache for at least half if not more days of the month. Sometimes they're crippling migraines for days others they're just a faint headache. Is that normal to have a headache that often? What could be causing it?

I suggest you make an appointment with a Neurologist and have an MRI and tests! I had a similar problem and it turned out I had a Meningioma! I'm not saying you have one just get it checked!!

P.s. I wanted to ask you have you actually been diagnosed with migraine? Have you had an electroencephalogram or EEG?. It would be good to get one. It checks the electrical pattern going to brain. They hook you up to some wires on your scalp. It doesn't hurt. and  you lay there and they read your brain activity. My pattern shows I have a migraine pattern. It can also show if you have a seizure pattern. MRI's CT scans, will show if you have a tumor. These can cause headaches too. A good neurologist that specializes in headaches would be good if you can get to one. I have one and she is great. My EEG is still abnormal even after taking migraine meds but at least you will know for sure what it is if you haven't had these done before..

I agree with trying to lower your number of migraines with finding out what your triggers are. I have suffered from migraines since my 20's. Some people get them once in a while, or once or twice a month or around their period. My neighbor was getting them every day. Other triggers for me are red wine, lack of sleep or too much sleep, stress, or after stress or excitement, MSG, aspartame, flashing lights such as on a video game or on TV, certain lighting (it varies with the person), etc. If that helps to lower the triggers that is good. I would also find a neurologist that specializes in migraines. I found one and she is great. She tried amitriptilyne and cyproheptadine first, but that didn't work for my vertigo. I am now on Topamax which helped with my migraine variant. I was getting double vision, auras, vertigo, migraine headaches, and lights that skip across my vision. most of this is gone. I also take Imitrex or one of the triptan drugs if the migraine comes on. If that doesn't work a couple of Ibupropin.  My neurologist said that if you take Tylenol or Imitrex or one of the triptans (sumatriptan for example) for more than 2 days in a week it will make your brain get used to it and you will get more migraines. Hope this helps.

The answer to your questions is No it is not normal to have headaches that often.

Keep a record of what you consume.  Migraine headaches can be brought on by triggers, like stress, anxiety, chocolate, oranges, cheese, red wine, lack of sleep, glaring at a computer for too long.  Everyone is different, so if one food triggers a migraine headache for someone it does not mean that that will be your trigger.  There are also prescription medications specifically for migraines.

The other causes of headaches could be from blood pressure, either being too low or too high.

I would suggest that you make an appointment with your doctor and discuss your problem with him.  Your doctor will check your blood pressure, and if it abnormal over a period of a few weeks' readings, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate medication for you.

Make sure that you do not get dehydrated.  Drink 2-3 litres of water a day, this is what is usually recommended.  Dehydration can cause headaches.

Hope you find the cause of your problem so that it can be treated appropriately.

Best wishes.
