Hi...

almost 2 years ago I was diagnoised with what my neuro said was between a seizure or a silent migrane.. the reason being.. the EEG which I wore for 10 days didn't show up anything..
here's the kicker.. I am 50 now.. so at the time 48 perimenopause.. it happened everytime I was MID CYCLE.. I would be falling asleep.... then .. it hit me.. sick stomach... a jump out of bed effect.. stumbling down the hall as if I needed help... my daughter was in from NYC an I noticed I couldn't understand what she was saying.. nor could hardly communicate.. lasted under a minute..then a bowel movement.. of course afterwards.. it makes you very nervous.. that's where the panic comes in.. I would lay back down with the light on..

anyway...my. allergist told me he suffered from "silent migranes"..and he swore I had the same thing as him.... I thought nah... I felt as if I was having a stroke or a seizure.. well guess what. that's exactly what "silent migraines" feel like. the following day.... your skull is just sore.... not a headache.. just sore..an if you read about silent migranes... you do feel like you're having a stroke.... it's almost as if .. you need help NOW!!

my neuro.. put me on klonopin... I fought the drug the entire time.. he started me out on .25.. told me when I left his office the first day.. that I should be on 2 mg's a night.. well guess what.. that's exactly right.... he was a life saver.I finally allowed him to help me.. I finally said.. I can't think about how many people are going through so many problems with this drug.. I need to realize it was made for this.. He explained it all to me. he said what this drug is used for today I don't know.. nor care.. He said I've been a neurologist for 30 years... an I know this drug works.. I was around when it was first coming to the market....here I was... I had been trying to get help for 3 years....... an every doc.. I saw said.. "PAXIL"...... trust me I wasn't nervous.. I know what anxiety is.. my daughter lived across the street from the world trade center on sept 11.....

this was a condition that you felt coming on.. an you knew it would eventually go to your head... after all this my neuro told me.. my "aura" was my stomach... I thought wow really?? because each time.. I would lay in bed.... my stomach would start getting sick.. then my mind would start.. racing.. before you know it. I was up... going down the hall ready to call an ambulance.. but before needing one.. it was all over!..
if anyone has any questions... feel free to email me.. ***@****..
thanks sophia

this was much different

on a final note... medication works.. haven't had a "seizure or a silent migrane since!... If I had to guess... even tho it almost sounds... not as serious and trust me this thing I would get is no laughing matter.. I would have always swore it was some sort of seizure... until... I read about silent migraines.  Imagine all the symptoms.. of a migraine.. PLUS more.. except no Pain...you litterly feel like you're having a stroke!!

Yes, you are right  migraines are like a seizure in the brain or sort of a brain storm, no pun intended!  I hope you get yours under control. I suffered so many years and when the doc gave me Klonopin I didn't know how addictive it is and how hard it would be to get off of it if I wanted to but I don't care. I am never going to try as this is a livelong disease. Most doctors didn't know anything about it. I went from GI doc to GI doc , immunologist, and then to two neurologists (one thought early on it was a migraine and ordered the EEG) but then i moved and had to start the diagnostic tests all over again. The GP said I didn't have migraines that it was ridiculous and later I got desperate and went to a psychologist. He was the one that diagnosed me. They are really good diagnositions because they listen and also deal with drugs. Now USC in Los Angeles has the leading doctor on cyclic vomiting syndrome and migraine variants. When the articles first came out years later about abdominal migraines and migraine variants etc. I was very happy to hear I was not crazy. Yes stress does trigger them and certain foods. Anyway, I guess I have a connection with anyone that has gone through this. It was so hard. Good luck and let me know how you do.

You are correct about the silent migraines.  I will keep the Klonopin in mind.  Right now the neurologist has me set up to start trying out Botox.

You are so right about silent migraines being a dreadful disease.  And, it does make sense what you said about the EEG showing the migraine or seizure pattern.  Migraines and epilepsy are so very closely related.  I've had one person describe the migraines as the brain having seizure but the body not having the convulsions.  And, she would know, since her daughter, who has migraines but not epilepsy has the same kinds of patterns in the brain scans as her brain scans when she herself has epilepsy.

I'm still working on getting the things under control.

Well, you're not completely off-topic, because it's possible the other posters might be effected by the silent migraines or something similar and not yet know it.

Hi FurballsMom, this is off the main topic here but It sounds like you have "silent" migraines too. I got these when I was 23 and it took 8 years to get diagnosed that I have a migraine variant or migraine without the migraine headache. They did and EEG and it was positive for a migraine or seizure pattern. I only got them starting at night and then would throw up all night and couldn't stop and had terrible stomach pain. They finally put me on Klonopin and I am 48 and have only had one since. I just wanted to share with you since it such a dreadful disease. I have gotten actual migraines with or without aura in my thirtys but now I only have auras. Pretty stange. What were your symptoms and have you gotten them under control?

It would prove helpful to see if your doctor will order a sleep study.  I had one a few weeks ago.  Sleep studies can rule things like sleep apnea or Upper Respiratory Resistance Syndrome (Less than sleep apnea) in or out.  If the sleep study is normal, that's actually a really good thing, because it rules out one of the major possibilities.

I don't really know if a sleep study can indicate Narcolepsy or not.

I do know that mine turned out normal.  To me, this is good news, because it means I won't have to deal with a CPAP machine of any sort.  Since I have chronic migraine disorder, the neurologist is suggesting that there is a strong possibility that my own fatigue is caused by having many of the kind that are called silent migraines (migraine without head pain).  In my own case, this seems like a logical conclusion.

What natalia1234 suggested about seeing a neurologist is a reasonable suggestion.  The only other specialist I can think of suggesting is a sleep specialist.

Pinkniblz, I do agree with you on the role of stress.  Especially, since all the experts agree with this conclusion.  I mean, stress can certainly aggravate my migraines, so you are correct about this being a part of the problem for most people.  We live in a very stressful world.  However, if you're actually falling asleep, rather than mostly feeling fatigued and you are in bed for the required 8 hours, I do think that a sleep study is definitely in order.

hi. i fall asleep alot during th day too and im always tired. got to say, not certain what it could be but stress may play a good roll. if something is stressing you, it could be the reason, if you are wakin up in th night alot, that is also an indicator of stress or worry. i would get it checked out by a doc. though, to see what it is.

hey vicky im not a doctor, but im pretty sure you might want to set up an appt with a neurologist, just
to check it out, it seems like your serotonin levels may decrease or increase at a rapid pace, which is the stuff that plays a crucial role in sleeping cycles and what keeps you awake during the day.

Hi Vicky, I am not a doctor but perhaps you could have narcolepsy. Does it mostly happen when you are not doing anything and less likely when you are actively doing something? There are treatments for this. I would talk to a doc about it. I assume it happens during the day too?
