eye floaters

I just started noticing what I would call a tiny black dot which seems to float around. By holding my hand over each eye, I know that it is in my left eye. I have seen from one and up to three. I have never noticed this until a week ago. Sometimes I do not see them at all. By Googling I would call them floaters. Is this serious? I just had a full eye exam with an opthomologist about 2 months ago.

Hi and no floaters are normal. I got them all of a sudden too. Although you have to be in the right light to see them usually. I recently also had  a new one. Instead of a grey or black one I got a gold or orangish colored one that zips across my eye or zig zags and goes flying off. I thought I had a eye problem and that is just  a floater too according the the doctor. But, when you get flashing lights and black dots or areas that stay there in the same spot that is when you have to be concerned. Hope you can keep your macular degeneration in check.
take care,

You were diagnosed with MDD(Macular Degenerative Disease)?  Well, I would be returning to your specialist ASAP with any problems and concerns.  MDD is a progressive and serious condition.  It has to be monitored closely.

I received an email asking me to choose a best answer and thank those who answered me for their efforts.

I certainly do thank all who took time to answer me, but I don't know how to choose a best answer so someone will have to assist me with this.

You said that black dots are a reason for concern. I thought that's what floaters were. I have black dots; mine don't stay in the same spot. Haven't called the doctor yet but am planning to.

I am 63. Had BP checked a couple months ago when I went to ophthalmologist. I had gone to the eye doctor, received the news that there was some macular degeneration starting and went to a specialist to confirm. I went on a good vitamin for this; doing what I can. I guess this is why the floaters concerned me so, and that they can be a sign of retinal tear or detachment. Anyway, I just wanted to see what online sources had to say. I will call my eye doctor to see if she thinks I need to go back in.
