Condom broke... Please advice

Hi, I had sex with a bar hostess last night (not yet 24hours as of time of posting.) I had a condom on but after pulling out upon ejaculation, I realized that the condom broke. I am worried now, PEP is not cheap and I do not know if I should go for it?

Status of source is unknown. Although she is not an official sex worker I believe that she is regularly paid for sex. Please advice.

Any time a condom breaks, there is a risk and testing is needed.

Howver, nPEP is for cases where the partner is confirmed positive.  You do not need to seek out nPEP.

Testing at 3 months post exposure will give you a conclusive result.

Hi again,

The results were out and it's negative. Although that does not mean she is 100% clean, I suppose the advice which will be given to me if I do ask again is "no, I do not need nPEP treatment."

I will go for screening in 12 weeks time. After that the results are out (assuming I am not involved in any unsafe sex practices), is it conclusive?

Hi all,

Thanks so much for all the wise advice you guys have given me.

I have managed to contact the girl and brought to a HIV test yesterday and results should be out by in about 8 to 9 hours time.

If you guys are interested you can check back later for the results of the test.

Meanwhile I would like to ask what are the "serious sides effects" and whether or not are they permanent? I understand that nPEP is a 28-day course, right?

Enough with the insults and the OP has already been given the correct advice,if he thought he required nPEP he would be at the doctors or hospital receiving it and not posting on here asking us.

The guidelines for recommendation of nPEP is a person that has had an exposure to a person that is known to be HIV positive and to start nPEP no later than 72 hours post exposure.

nPEP is recommended for people with an exposure to a KNOWN HIV + person.  nPEP has some very serious side effects, it is not like taking an antibiotic.  So you would recommend nPEP for every person with a condom failure?  That's ridiculous.  Unforunately, you don't know what you're talking about.  You can wait until Teak weighs in but he'll say the same thing as well.

And, another thing, how would ANY of us be responsible?  For one, we aren't handing out diagnoses and we are only offering recommendations.  MedHelp has a disclaimer about the advice offered on the site.

The ONLY person responsible would be the person who had sex, even with an unfortunate condom failure...it's a risk one takes.

"Anyway nurses never diagnose or answer"...I don't know what this means...I am not giving any diagnosis and am certainly more educated than you are about this.  I have been answering questions on this forum for several years.   NONE of us on this forum are doctors and NONE of us have ever claimed to be giving diagnoses.

DUO tests are very expensive compared to just having an antibody test.

You're back again with another user name, you don't give up do you. You're WRONG.nPEP is only given to people who have had a high risk exposure with a known HIV+ person.Maybe you would like to pay his nPEP bill for him and be there when he is having major side affects from the drugs.I never said 4 weeks was conclusive I said A DUO at 4 weeks is 99.89% reliable that doesn't mean conclusive does it.And who's we?

You don't require nPEP,you just need to test.At 4 weeks you can have the HIV DUO test and then at 12 weeks you can take your final test. All the best.
