How effective are condoms??

Ok to cut a long story short, I had two random sexual encounters in Ethiopia but they were all protected sex throughout. I haven't tested for Hiv yet but I'm worried about the effectiveness of the condoms used. I didn't test them after the encounters and I don't know if that's necessary. I developed chills nearly four weeks after the first encounter and do not know of it was ars or just any other infection not related. How worried should I be? Are condoms really effective against HIV? I have a girlfriend I don't want to harm her!

If a condom fails it rips a long amount down the seam and is left hanging in tatters, so you both know it. Testing a condom is unnecessary. You cant get HIV since you used the condom so are safe.

So you say if it had failed I would have noticed it. Ok fine. I saw my semen in the condom and I even left it on the floor for a few hours and it was still in there. Does that mean anything? I was just worried that I might have missed a rapture somewhere.
It didn't hang in tatters so it didn't fail.
Micro tears that you are worried about are a myth.
