HIV DUO - 1 Month Post-PEP

Hi All,

How reliable is a HIV DUO test 31 days Post-PEP? (58 days Post-Exposure).

I am due to test 3 months Post-PEP, I am just wondering what is the chance of the initial test changing if I have had no other exposures in the interim.

Many thanks and Best Regards,
Paul

Hello nursegirl!

I hope you are well! Sorry to bother you again.

Just an update really, I recently received results for my 3 months (12.5 weeks) Post-PEP HIV test. It was Negative.

Can I now consider this result as conclusive? Or do I require more testing?

Your answers are most appreciated!
Many thanks and Best regards.

I agree, the side effects were unpleasant and yes, the treatment was very expensive. I hadnt heard of PEP, I panicked and followed the docs advice. My last dose was 28/12/2012 and I tested in the UK on 28/01/2013 and result was negative with a negative for all other std's. I know I have to wait until the end of march for a conclusive result. I just really wanted to know the chances of my current test result changing with no other exposures in the interim.

Thanks again Nursegirl! Your comments are greatly appreciated!

The doctor wasn't "wrong" per se, but typically, nPEP is reserved for instances  where a person has had an exposure to a known + person.  That's because nPEP comes with its own significant risks.  It can be very toxic, can have very bothersome side effects and is usually very expensive.  I wouldn't have recommended nPEP for your risk, but now that you started it...it only makes sense to finish it.

Hello Nursegirl!

Thank you for your comment! Much appreciated.

I had a brief (approx. 2 minute) unprotected vaginal exposure with a female in Thailand. I was prescribed PEP after visiting the hospital 14 hours after the event. Before this visit, I had never heard of PEP. So I followed the docs advice. Was the doctor wrong to prescribe PEP in this instance?

I tested one month post-PEP, following the UK docs recommendations. I have another 6 weeks until the final test. Was just after experience over the reliability of the test I have already taken.

Many thanks and Best Regards.

Any negative test result along the way is reassuring, but not conclusive.  You'll need to test again at 3 months after your last dose of nPEP for a definitive result.

What was your risk that made you seek nPEP?
