Horribly scared female, after unprotected exposure

I had been seeing a guy for about a week, got drunk, and went back to his place on Tuesday night.  He informed me that he was clean of all STDs.  We had unprotected intercourse for all of about 3 minutes.  Thursday morning I came down with a sore throat, fatigue, a fever of 99.7, and swollen glands.  I went to the doctor this morning, and was tested for both Strep and Mono.  Both came back negative so the doctor diagnosed me as having Bacterial Pharyngitus and gave me Biaxin for it.  But I keep reading on the internet that bacterial pharyngitus is a symptom of acute hiv infection, if strep and mono are ruled out!!!!  I'm freaking out here.  My sore throat has subsided since taking the antibiotic and I'm drinking lots of fluids to keep my fever down but I'm still scared.  What is my risk???

terrified one.

i see so much of myself in you.  The terror, the anxiety, the constant checking of lymph nodes and the guilt.

you aren't the only one who has had this types of symptoms and tested negative for mono and strep.
I went through this with my ex.
same symptoms, tested neg for mono and strep and eventually we both tested neg for HIV.

you are going to be okay.
Go get a test at 3 months...
you'll be fine.

Keep your fingers off your glands or you will cause them to swell and hurt.

Ugh, glands are still swollen and I'm checking them ALL THE TIME.  I'm no longer feverish or tired but this is literally killing me :(

No it's not a symptom of HIV.

Also, I'm spitting up nasty yellow junk.  Everytime I clear my sinuses.  Is this a symptom as well?

ok update

fever is gone.  fatigue is gone.  i feel generally healthy overall.  my throat doesnt hurt AS much but my glands are still swollen :(  when will they go down?  im negative for strep and mono and I have swollen glands...it HAS to be HIV :(

I'm sorry I didn't mean to fuel any stigma about the disease.  It's just that I'd be disowned or banished from my family and my friends would all look down on me.  I don't feel I could face society if I had this infection.  Which saddens me because I could never ever look down on someone that had HIV, EVER.

Wow...you need to educate yourself.  First of all...HIV is a virus, not a bacteria.

Secondly...it is the train of thought that you posted that fuels the stigma around HIV.  IN this day and age...it shouldn't still be that way, and if people would educate themselves, it wouldn't be.

You had a risk, but most likely not signficant...and your symptoms are NOT related to HIV.  You need to test at 3 months post exposure for a conclusive result.  I'm sure you'll be okay.  From now on...no condom.....no sex!

I asked the guy if he'd been tested for everything and he assured me he was clean.  But why is everything on the internet for pharyngitus linked to HIV???  And if I don't have strep or mono, then what is my bacterial pharyngitus coming from??? Is the bacteria HIV??

This is eating at me so much that for the past 4 hours, I planned on where in the U.S. I would relocate because I don't want anyone around me to know that I have HIV.  I'd go into hiding from my friends and family! I'm Catholic and seriously considered joining a convent to hide my identity.  Im dealing with so much right now because of this exposure =( Because I was drunk and made a horrible decision

dont associate those symptoms with hiv..almost every normal flu symptom is the same symptoms of that so dont get yourself crazy. Plus you wouldnt have them 2 days later anyway. ill be the last one 2 tell you to calm down cause im a hypochondriac myself but just wait a few weeks and get tested to ease your mind
= )

If some does have symptoms of ARS they don't come on as early as yours and a fever with ARS is above 101F.

Right now you're being paranoid over symptoms that could be the result of numerous things.   In any case, you can't come to the conclusion that you may have HIV based solely on these symptoms, especially when it has only been a few days since the sexual encounter.  Your best bet is to 1) ask your partner if he's ever been tested himself in the past.  If he has, then it will put your mind at ease a bit.  2) go see your doctor in a few weeks and get tested yourself just to put your mind 100% at ease.

You seem to be a bit of a hypochondriac just like myself.  I tend to freak out as well think only about the worst possible scenario every time I have a sore throat or a fever.  Most of the time it is all in our heads though.  But like I said, go see your doctor, get checked out, and put your mind at ease once and for all ;)
