Ok, im really confused, some help please! :)

OK, so i keep posting and posting and getting similar answers,,there have been some developments ,, so im hoping someone can help.... I had extremly regrettable sex,,,,,(unprotected sex) around 6weeks ago at the time of my blood test (im at just over 7 weeks now)

I actually took two blood tests. One from the NHS (british national health service) and the day after i paid for an instant test because with i private doctor because i couldnt stand the wait for the NHS results.

When i had the instant test it came back negative, the guy who did it seemed amendment that i wasn't infected , he didnt even mention that i should have one at 3 months, he said something like "your not enfected, dont worry"
this confused be due to the 6 week rule and conclusive 3 month test....

anyway so i know just got back from the NHS gu clinic and got negative results for everything including HIV....
when i asked the lady who gave me the results ,,, i said  "how reliable are these results?" she didnt even say anything about the 6 week thing being a good sign, she said "we cant tell at this stage, you need to come back at the three month stage"  when i mentioned reading on the net... (for example from here it say from some of the doctors that they have never seen a 6 week test go positive) she sais "its rubbish dont believe anything of the net, 3 months is the only time we can tell"

what does all this mean,

everyone gives different opinions.....

how come some doctors say not to worry after 6 weeks on this site? if people i see in really say thats a load of rubbish,,

then theres all the comments from teak and other members here, (not to sound rude, sorry) that i assume arent ecspecially qualified in this field that also give different opinions,,,

everyones confusing me,,

i feel no better after my test results and spending £110

any words of guidence?

Thankyou everyone

A negative result at 6 weeks is a VERY VERY VERY VERY good indicator of your final outcome.  The two very experienced docs here in the expert forum, who have decades of experience between them have never seen a 6 week neg turn into a pos.  Nor have I.  All the patients I have cared for through the years with HIV and/or AIDS tested POS quite rapidly post the exposure.  Within 2-4 weeks.

Now, the CDC and other agencies have a responsibility to be conservative, to allow for all kinds of scenarios to be considered when talking about risk.  Therefore, that is why the current guidelines are 3 months.  It USED to be 6 months until it was changed...and the figure is still conservative.

I'm sure you are just fine, your result will likely not change.  Just try to hang in there a few more weeks until you can collect your conclusive results.  The odds are VERY much in your favor.

Thankyou for your advice , it really does help..

i do have anxeity problems recently, after 2 tests they still wont go away, the reason im so worried is because my unprotected drunken sexual encounter was during a period that me and my ex gf had lost contact, within in the last week we decided to give it another go, ill see her in two weeks,,, i feel like i made a big mistake and i cant tell her this, its going to be a secret that i have to burden for the rest of my life,,i have reignited hopes of spending my life with this girl, and its that fear of perhaps being infected, then infecting her that is toruring me, i dont know what to do...

a word of advice...stop fueling your anxiety.  stay off the internet reading about hiv...there is alot of misinformation there and it only confuses you more.

ever heard the saying, "nothing changes if nothing changes"???  if you are doing something that is bringing turmoil, anxiety, whatever into your life...change that behaviour.

let me see if i can explain this for you in a way that you can understand.

are modern day tests able to pick up hiv earlier than a few years back?  of course...the wonder of science.
a test done at 6-8 weeks is a HUGE indicator of your status...and i mean HUGE...buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut...according to the guidelines...set forth by the cdc, fda, and the manufacturers of the tests...3 months is considered CONCLUSIVE.  now...UNTIL...the "guideline" is changed...NO ONE should take it upon themselves to tell someone that a test done at 6 weeks is conclusive.

a guideline is a guideline.
