Risks of getting HIV from Thai sex worker

Hi there,

I recently went to Phuket in Thailand, got really drunk, and made a very bad move and had unprotected oral and vaginal sex with a hooker there. It was a one off, and we didnt even have sex for very long. Really stupid move by me and im really regretting it. I've been freaking out about HIV since i've read online that its quite prevalent in the sex industry in Thailand, but i've read all sorts of different stats and facts about it and I am confused and worried. I would love some clarity and peace of mind.

It was recent, so no side effects/symptoms of STI's just yet (although, i will keep a close eye on things). Does anyone know the chances I could have got HIV off her? I read that even if she did have it, the chance of getting it off her in a single encounter is 1 in 40,000? Also, what is the prevalence of HIV in sex workers in the South of Thailand? I read it is quite bad in the North, up to 40% or is this an old stat.? Praying to god i've got nothing at all.....

Thanks!

Worried sick

Chances of your escape are very much there, but when we talk about life, we dont want to take chances. Since your risk is there (no matter how small or how significant), you need to get yourself tested after 3 months of the exposure for a final and conclusive test. Alcohol and an unkown woman is not a right combination and one has to pick one out of these two.

Dont bother about statistics, Unprotected sex! Only conclusion, You had a risk exposure to HIV, sex workers have the highest incidence as they STDs are their natural work hazard. Hence test for NAT within a Week, or follow a combo at 4-6 weeks and a 3 month conclusive test. Next time use a condom. One thumb rule If you wanna be drunk, dont go for sex later.

Due to campaigns for increasing condom usage in sex workers, the prevalence of HIV isn't as high as it used to be. I think Dr. Handsfield has quoted something like 5% or less. If a female partner is infected, a male's average chance of catching HIV from vaginal sex is 1 in 2000. There is a remote chance that you caught HIV from this encounter, but you will need to test to know your status.

If you can do it, you may want to have a 4th generation (combo) test 4 weeks after exposure. As the combo tests are very accurate at that time, a negative result will be highly reassuring and extremely unlikely to change. Test again at 3 months with a standard antibody test for an 'official' conclusive result.
