thank you nursegirl..... i didnt know an appropriate response to SW without sounding offensive...
Actually, the length of time a person has been posting, their profile info, quality of answers, quantity of answers IS important to posters, as it build confidence in the answers they are receiving.
OP, the oral debate is something that isn't going away any time soon. All we can do is share with you the info we have at hand, which is quite significant. It's awfully hard to ignore the results of studies where no incidents of oral sex were reported. Also, think of it this way, if oral sex was a true risk, there would be newly infected people every day...not a few "questionable" claims that can't be substantiated. Half the world would be infected by now.
Our stance isn't going to change, and you can browse the forum to find countless dscussions about the same topic.
thanks again.. ill stop beating myself up for tonight
That 7% of people with HIV apparently caught it by oral sex (8/120 = 7%) is entirely compatible with a risk of 1 in 10,000 for each oral sex exposure with an infected person. The transmission risk for vaginal sex is around 1 in 1,000 (10 times riskier than oral), and for anal sex it's around 1 in 200-500 (different for the receptive versus insertive partner). These numbers are entirely consistent with a proportion of somewhere around 7% of infections due to oral sex and the rest (93%) from vaginal or anal.
I suppose this is the post in the doctor forum that lead to my question......
No, it's myth vs. fact and the fact is, HIV is not transmitted by oral sex.
thank you teak... i suppose one would just have to say that there are 2 camps and neither will ever meet. conservative vs liberal i guess
No incident HIV infections among MSM who practice exclusively oral sex.

There is no debate (among experts) about the HIV risks associated with oral sex. The risk is so low that almost nobody who cares for HIV infected patients has ever had a patient believed to have been infected that way. Among experts, it's a semantic issue about using terms like "no risk" and "very low risk". There is no difference between my or Dr. Hook's use of "low risk" and other experts' "no risk".
DR. HANSFIELD
"And oral sex is basically safe sex -- completely safe with respect to HIV and although not zero risk for other STDs, the chance of infection is far lower than for unprotected vaginal or anal sex. Please educate yourself about the real risks. If you stick with oral sex and condom-protected vaginal or anal sex, you have no HIV worries and very little worry about other STDs. " DR HANSFIELD
"I am sure you can find lots of people who believe that HIV is transmitted by oral sex, but you will not find scientific data to support this unrealistic concern..." DR HOOK
"HIV is not spread by touching, masturbation, oral sex or condom protected sex."- DR. HOOK
in the public HIV Prevention forum of MedHelp, TEAK and the other moderators maintain that oral sex in all forms is a zero risk activity. Would you agree with this assessment?
I TOTALLY AGREE / DR GARCIA
"HIV is not spread by masturbation, through oral sex, through kissing or other casual contact." Dr. Hook
"The observation on thousands and thousands of observations is that HIV is not spread by oral sex (of any sort)." DR HOOK
"I would not say your risk ,if he had HIV is "slim to none"- that's too high. I would say they are effectively zero. How much of his ejaculate or other genital secretions you may have swallowed makes no difference. EWH "
"As far as HIV is concerned, there is no known risk of getting HIV from performing oral sex on an infected partner, even if that person's genital secretions get into your eyes or if you swallow." Dr.Hook
HIV is not spread by oral sex, giving or receiving, even if sores, gum disease or blood is present
DR HOOK
The fact is that there are no cases in which HIV has been proven to be transmitted by oral sex, including fellatio.. EWH
are you available to help with a question i posted in the hiv forum.
id like a response from someone who has been involved in medhelp for more than a couple weeks..... thank you
HIV is not a concern for nor a route of transmission from oral sex. It's the doctors job to say any sexual act is a risk but there are ZERO cases in history in which someone got HIV from unprotected sex. Move on please:)
And to clarify, it is this site's stance, based on studies and our own MedHelp experts (all of whom are world-renowned for their work in this field), that oral sex carries no risk for HIV.
