Almost exactly three weeks ago, I had the misfortune of getting extremely drunk while in Amsterdam and participating in protected sex with a girl in the Red Light District. The sex did not last long, as I was quickly overcome with guilt and shame and left after only a couple minutes. HOWEVER, upon arriving home I noticed a couple wounds near the base of my penis, in areas not covered by the condom.
1. A small patch of irritated skin from an old scratch, mostly healed but with a very small amount of clear/thin discharge.
2. A couple small scabs from in-grown hairs or shaving cuts.
In a panic, I rushed to the hospital the next day, preparing to ask for PEP medication. The doctor there looked at my injuries and told me that my risk was very low and that they could not risk PEP. This made me feel much better, obviously.
HOWEVER (again), I have spent the last 2.5 weeks extremely sick. About four days after the incident. I came down with the beginnings of what appeared to be a sinus infection, eventually descending into my throat resulting in a deep cough and extreme difficulty speaking. I did not notice any rash symptomatic of ARS, and did not experience any significant fever, night sweats, or headaches. I noticed a slight swelling in the lymph nodes of my neck, but nowhere else (I have heard that ARS generally swells all of these? Please confirm if possible)
I was doing my best to dismiss all of this as a severe but normal sinus infection, until I woke up this morning with a single mouth ulcer identical to those sympomatic of ARS. At best, this is a horrible coincidence, and the worst-case scenario is driving me crazy.
Relevant Details: During my trip, I was extremely hard on my body. I slept very little and was clubbing 'till 9am in the morning the day before my sickness got truly bad. The severity of my sickness paralleled my patterns of unhealthy activity. I'm not sure if a viral infection like ARS would be more consistent and less reliant on my behavior or not.
I realize that I am still low risk, but I am so anxious about all this that I am having difficulty functioning until enough time has passed to get a conclusive test. I am really looking for reassurance, and particularly hopeful that the lack of the characteristic rash/fever help eliminate ARS and point to a simple sinus infection.
Thanks for any help, I can really use it right now.
