Cirrhotic has SVRed

I had asked some questions during my dad's triple therapy with incivek, and this community has been the most valuable source of information. My dad found out today that his 6 month post tx pcr is UND. This is his third time treating having relapsed after his other txs and since he will be 70 this year, we knew this might be his last chance at treatment. I am posting to let people know that SVR is possible even under the most horrible treatment conditions.

Besides having cirrhosis, my dad had 4 transfusions (one resulting in a 4 day hospital stay; he stopped taking incivek 2 weeks early; for a three week period the only medication he was taking was a half dose of interferon; for most of the tx, he was on half dose interferon and greatly reduced riba, he had horrible rashes throughout the tx as well as bad edema in his hands, lower legs and feet, he lost his sense of taste and was fatigued and achy; many of his lab numbers were greatly off - he had most of the listed side effects. Often, he wanted to stop treatment. With the help of his greatly experienced hepatologist and encouragement of family, he stuck it through 48 weeks of treatment. We let him know that even if he did not SVR, he was still giving his liver a break.

Please know that even if it seems all the odds are stacked against you, there is hope.

Please pass on my congratulations to your dad. He did so well to go through a rough tx and now to be told he is SVR must be music to his ears and makes it all worth it.
What fantastic news!!
Not everyone can complete tx at the fully prescribed dose so it is great to know that svr is still attainable.
Thank you for sharing.

This is fantastic news!  I am so happy for you both.  It sounds like he really beat the odds.  So many people have the odds stacked against them and come out smelling like a rose.  Others not so lucky due to unfortunate circumstances.  So, like several waiting, we are waiting for the same wonderful news SVR,  hoping to join your club soon :).

Congrats again!

This is fantastic news. I know your dad went through a very rough treatment and had so many side effects and problems. But he stuck with it (with you  at his side) and he made it to SVR. Thank you so much for letting us know.

Here's wishing  your dad and your entire family the very best for the future.
