Post tx alcohol question

Hi All,
I am 5 months post tx, soc + Inciv. Went out last week and had two martinis with dinner and then another two later on. I must have gotten really blitzed because I couldn't even remember driving home and I threw up awhile after getting home. I have never been a drinker but did enjoy a martini once and awhile. Shouldn't my liver be able to take some martinis? I really don't understand whats going on - Any comments? - Thank you - Fred

i can't believe how irresponsible that was of you.  don't drink and drive.  you were given a gift with clearing hep c, don't waste it.  if you're going to drink, stay home or take a taxi.  belle

Fred, my husband hasn't touched a drop of alcohol in over 30 years.  He has Hep C and Cirrhosis.  He's failed 3 treatments in 5 years, most recently triple tx with Incivek, due to poor response to Interferon.  You SVRd.  Please don't waste this blessing.

I have noticed, that the "drinking Martinis thing" was fun for me, when I was in my twenties, although I didn't drive, I wore roller-skates to the bar.
I caught Hep C in my late twenties, so I havent drank since, but your experience sounds like a learning experience: your liver is telling you to stop poisoning it, and hopefully nobody was hit, on your way home, if you were behind the wheel, but cant remember the drive~

Onward & Upward

do you me "upward" in the biblical sense? if you continue on this path, you just might get your wish...really?  dear old mom used to say everything in moderation, then she used to hit me with the wooden spoon. you might ask why? when i was a kid, stupidity was not tolerated, so she wacked me.
when it comes to liver disease and drinking just remember me getting wacked with the wooden spoon.

cheers

You're kidding right? Good one you had everybody going. I prefer riding my motorcycle when I'm blitzed, less chance of injuring others that way. I have a little trouble balancing it though. I tried it once and dropped it three times on my way to the end of the driveway. You should try that. Or maybe hang-gliding. That would be fun.

You should buy a lotto ticket - you are lucky to be alive.  If a cat only has 9 lives, I would say you are pushing it.  I want to whole heartedly congratulate you on completing TX.  Did you SVR?  I want to celebrate mucho also which can be done in a multitude of ways.  Thank you for bringing this dangerous potential to our attention and Via con Dios.

PS I'm not sure if martini's count as extra drinks over say a beer or anything but I found this..........

In some cases, as little as 6 drinks in an hour for a smaller person have proven lethal.

Many alcohol poisoning deaths occur after participation in drinking games or dares – scenarios where a person might drink far more alcohol far more quickly than they normally would. These games are especially dangerous due to the lag time of alcohol absorption into the blood stream. It takes a while to fully absorb all of the alcohol you drink (30-90 minutes for full absorption) so you might continue to quickly drink shooters, not knowing how dangerously intoxicated you were going to get.

Sounds like what is referred to as a blackout. It usually takes a lot of practice to drink enough to have these memory lapses. Its not your liver causing you to throw up, its your body rejecting the poison. Alcohol will kill you if you ingest way to much. But 4 strong drinks is not even close to anything like death, or blackouts. It must have scared you to make you want to post about it. You should listen to what your body is telling you.

Fred, when you say driving home, I hope this means you were the passenger and not behind the wheel.  Otherwise, I'll withhold my comments and won't make any assumptions.

A drink or two maybe, but four drinks and I'd be laid out on the floor after no alcohol in over a year.  I'm not sure what you don't understand.  Your system has just received a large dose of alcohol and is rejecting it.  A good sign you drank way too much.

I have such a hard time with your post. Gambling with your life (and the lives of others) after what you have been through?
The previous posters have all been so wonderfully kind to you in their response. I love them for it because it is helping me to restrain myself from heaping abuse on you. FRED! Please don't throw away this gift that so many of us are dying for. Embrace your health and life and get on with doing good things while you yet live...

Bali makes a good point.
Although our livers do regenerate, it takes time.
The virus being gone means your liver is no longer under attack.

It's hard for me to respond unemotionally to this post.
A good friend went through tx, cleared the virus, drove drunk and sideswiped a bus. She too has little memory of what she did.
She spent a night in jail, lost her driver's license, had to attend AA meetings, and all because of doing exactly what you did.

If you are going to drink, leave your car at home.

A martini once in a while and 4 martinis in a row is not the same .
Where is your common sense ?
Also drinking and driving .......

BTW, I know someone who started drinking shortly after tx and her belly started swelling up with presumably ascites . Just because the virus is gone does not mean you can abuse your liver.

If someone abstains from alcohol for sometime the body tend to reject it.  Fred the odd drink would not hurt you anymore than anyone else if your liver is healthy ( I don;t know what your staging was) however  remember the liver never likes an over abundance of alcolhol to filter  and yes...stay off the road for heavens sake if you do this,,

Best..

couldn't even remember driving home

Wow!! That's scary for everybody....I haven't drank in ten years and if I had 4 martinis I'd be blitzed also. Your tolerence just dropped that's it, but what James asked is a good question if you have liver damage drinking after treatment might not be a wise thing and please don't drive anymore I've got teenagers on the road!!
