Hi there I am so sorry to here about your dad being so sick.My dad had cirrhosis of the liver for many years. He was never a real heavy drink but yet they say thats what caused his liver damage. He quit drinking took his medicine, and was on a no salt low protien diet.He was on the transplant list for three years he was in and out of hospital for his amonia levels, parisintisis, vomiting blood, and rectum bleeding.Six months ago we moved him to Graham Tx so both me and my sister could care for him two weeks ago he passed away.I hope that the out come for your dad is different.Find out everything about your dads condition and what options he has or if he is a canidate for a liver transplant.Dont give up on him I know its hard and frustrating at time but your dad needs you. Just enjoy each day that you have with him and let him know how much you love him.Continue to care for him and be there when he needs you.I will keep you both in my prays. If you ever need to talk I am here stay strong and take care.Your friend Mistie

You can't lump everybody that has cirrhosis into a single group and say that they will be fine and live for a long time if they adopt certain behaviors and cut out others.  There is a mountainous difference between having compensated and decompensated cirrhosis.  I don't know how anyone could possibly tell the state of someone's liver disease from only a single  symptom being presented, although passing blood, if it is related to the cirrhosis, does not sound good at all for predicting a long life.  You need to get get a prognosis from a hepatologist to get an accurate idea of how sick your father is.

Hello,
I read your post and you are just precious! I do not want to scare you with any information I'am going to give you. But you are a wise young lady, and I know you want the best for your dad, so I would like to tell you a few things. Yes your dad can live a full long life...but he MUST make some necessary changes NOW! Since he is in the hospital I'am sure he has been told already what I'am going to tell you. He has enough damage to his liver now that yes he must stop drinking, he should not take certain drugs- no accetaminophen ( Tylenol ) or no cholesterol lowering drugs (statins), and several antibiotics...too many to list,so always read the instructions on the package before taking. There will be a warning where they list "side effects", and it will say not to take if you have a liver disease, or liver damage. You can speak with your dads doctors, to learn how you can help him. I have given you just the basic things to do. If you would like to know more, such as foods he can eat to have a healthier liver, vitamins he can take to help him etc.,please let me know, I will be glad to help you. You are doing a wonderful job, sweetheart!! Kande

We don't have any doctors here but you should know that your father's condition is not a death sentence.

In fact, many here are leading normal lives with stage 4, cirrhosis.

Of course it's very important that your father listens to his doctors about drinking and all matters pertaining to his health.

If he isn't already, you might suggest he goes to see a liver specialist (hepatologist).

Hepatologists have the experience and are in the best position to guide your entire family through this difficult period. And if he can't stop drinking on his own, there are many groups like AA (alcohol anonymous) that can help him.

Your father is lucky to have such a caring daughter.

All the best,

-- Jim
