I just asked my doctor this question.  He said as long as I am SVR and once I take that last Harvoni pill, I can have a glass of wine or two.  He said that having a glass of wine will not bring the virus back, I would have to get re-infected.

Hi

How much liver damage do you have and what does your doctor say?

If you are F3/F4 then nope no alcohol

Good luck and congrats on SVR

Your liver will thank you for not drinking

I have been SVR for about 6 months and have F3 fibrosis. I was told by my doctor an occasional glass of wine is OK as the virus is gone and it is no longer damaging the liver. Asking what occasional means I was told a glass of wine or two a month. There's drinking and then there's drinking. Anyone who has had issues around drinking knows exactly what I mean by that.

My personal opinion. I limit  my alcohol to no more than two standard size drinks a week. Never more than one in day. I enjoy the taste but not the buzz. One of my wishes is to have one last drink before I die.  We snuck a sip of beer to my dad a day before he died at 84.  He smiled.

Alcoholics or anyone who has a problem or a risk of having more than one standard drink at a time shouldn't drink.

some links that show the harm and or value of not even drinking " moderately "

"The research challenges previous claims that moderate amounts of alcohol could have a protective effect on the heart.

Even if you drink as little as 12 units a week – less than a pint of beer or two small glasses of wine a day – this will still have a negative effect on health say scientists."

I don't think anyone can tell you what to do.  It's your decision. Only your doctor can give you medical advice.

Personally, my non medical opinion.  If you really want to have one standard size 4 oz glass of 12% wine OK.   If you have any concerns that this might lead to a second or more drinks on that day.  Or lead to a daily consumption and or  more than one drink at time in the future then NO.   Also if you currently have other conditions that warrant no alcohol.

There is good statistics that someone with low F1 fibrosis who achives SVR will have a high percentage of reversal of fibrosis in the absence of other medical conditions that could cause fibrosis.  Moderate alcohol use more than 2 or 3 standard drink a week could possibly prevent fibrosis reversal. The greater the amount of alcohol consumed the more likely the possible increase in fibrosis for some, in my non medical opinion.

Just to put my 2 cents in, I brought my own alcohol free beverages, including alcohol free wine, while on Tx, and after. Didn't want to risk having to redo Tx. I figure I have a $100,000 liver I need to protect now. Also most celebrations now have alcohol free alternatives.

Hi FT,

Well...... Forgive, yikes... A bit strong.... I do want to say I hope you take care of a precious chance to have a long life & healthy liver...
That being said, I have 0 room to talk as I still dance with some nicotine :( when I take that seriously enough to stop for good, perhaps then I'll jump on with a clear heart of conviction!!
Until then, I wish us both health~

Hi:-)
Thx for responding!  I sure wouldn't dink while on treatment, for many reasons. As far as what I consider, darlin, I have no idea or judgement, only you can know how important that drink is, to you, right?

Blessings FT,
Randy

One of the main reasons people relapse is noncompliance with treatment. Like I wrote before, take your own alcohol free wine while on Tx when you join your friends. If they are your true friends they will be supportive of you. Once you are SVR, then if you have a small amount of damage, you can talk to your doctor about drinking. Keep the goal in sight here. We are ALL here to support you in your Tx and slaying your dragon. I had a very good friend die from hepatic cancer, I would not wish that for anyone.

I don't know where you are going with this. First you ask about a drink of wine after SVR.  Some members gave a None opinion others gave maybe ok for an ocasional one drink.

Now your asking about wine on the weekend with friends if it's considered a "drinker".  May I suggest that if you have more questions about drinking you consider asking your doctor or maybe here http://www.medhelp.org/forums/Alcoholism/show/158

You haven't told us much about your HCV condition, how long you have been on Harvoni etc.  Seen your other post about terrible itchy feet. You should really advise your doctor about that.

I think just about everyones opinion here is you really shouldn't be consuming alcohol during treatment.

I really wish you the best in completing treatment an achiving SVR but personally, with no offense intented, see any point continuing a discussion of what about "Alcohol situations" in this forum.

We will be happy to help you if we can with treatment problems.

Harvoni only gets rid of the virus only time will heal the injury done to your liver.

Hi Sandi

I just want to add that non alcohol beer and wine actually have a small alcohol content about 0.5% alcohol by volume.

Lynn, Good to know, I didn't know that. I have had 1 bottle of the FRE merlot wine open since the beginning of January. Still have a partial bottle, use it in cooking, and have had 1 glass to drink. I didn't drink at all on Tx, instead bought sparkling juice for celebrations. I am 9 months eot now, and have had a small amount of really great wine (a half glass of wine 2 days in a row) during the holidays. The difference being I am SVR24 now, with no fibrosis or cirrhosis that was ever detected. My doctor told me after SVR12 I could have an occasional glass of wine too. Everyone is individual in their status. I will never take my health for granted anymore. Thanks Lynn.

Hi.. you are the only one that can make that decision. And I think I can speak for a few here on the forum, and that is we are all here to help with any questions that are asked, however if you were maybe looking for the community to in some way make drinking ok I doubt if you will find many that would support.
I think each person knows what is right and wrong for them. I wish you good luck and continued health
Peace
Deb
