hep and insurance

my husband was recently diagnosed with hep c. He works hard, but his employer doesn't offer med insurance. If we get insurance for him on our own, will they cover his hep c treatments, or is it considered a prexisting condition? Also, how much do hep c treatments cost if you don't have insurance? We want to get him treatment, but we are limited on money. thank you everyone. I'm glad i found this place.

I would try to get him into this clinical trial, provided he is a Genotype 1 and has an hgb count under 15. This is a great trial since you are guaranteed to get triple therapy with Boceprevir at the correct dosage; as it's only testing ways to combat tx-related anemia.

If that isn't possible, you could wait for other good clinical trials especially if it turns out your husband is at a low stage.

Good luck!

Not sure if your husband has to stay at his present job but it may be beneficial to switch to a company that offers health insurance. Group insurance typically covers pre-exsiting conditions.

Hi there, and welcome to the discussion group. It’s likely that individual insurance would deny on the grounds of preexisting condition, assuming you could buy it. Things are changing though, and laws are changing quickly; talk to an insurance agent and see what’s new right now.

HCV treatment can be rather pricey; in the range of $USD 50,000 - $200,000 per year. There is help available with the medications if insurance isn’t available; the manufacturers provide patient assistance to those that can’ afford the drugs.

Another course of action might be entering into clinical trial; there are ongoing studies worldwide, although there are pros and cons involved with trial participation as well.

Tell us more about his diagnosis; does he have a genotype yet?

Good luck—

Bill
