Hey Bill. Yes you are right thats exactley what they were looking for and they did find gastric varices but said that they wern't bleeding so thats a good thing. I've read about them having to be tied off butt the Dr. seemed like she intended to leave them alone. What do you thimk about that? His billiruben was up to 21 yesturday he looked sicker than ever! I did get him to take his lactulose twice and also managed to get quite a bit of food down him though.. So i'm praying that he used the bathroom quite a bit last night to get those toxins out! I'm already missing our conversations as he can barely speek because of the confusion. Oh i almost forgot.. He is not om any transplant list because all though the liver specialist suggested it he was also honest in telling us that we would most likely be denied. I'm sure he knows what he's talking about as he is on the panel at UCSF that makes the desision if you get on the list or not. Iether way my papa didn't want it anyhow. He said being 73 he's lived his life and that he would rather see a person with there whole life ahead of them be able to thrive off of a new liver that so many are praying, waiting, and hoping for. Ahhh MY BEAUTIFUL PAPA AND HIS BEAUTIFUL HEART:)
Well done there girl!!! You sound like you're coping a little better today (although I realise that's transitory at the moment). I love that your Dad demanded to know what the prayer was for - that's certainly spirited, and if there's any hope of a miracle or expert medical intervention, I'm sure he'll be a candidate. Keep on hanging in there; he's a lucky Dad.
Oh... hmm... Thanks, Dave; I missed that. I really don't have an answer to your question.
Bill
Do they do liver transplants on people that are 73? I don't know that much about it, but I thought there was a cutoff point.

The endoscopy and colonoscopy are likely preventative measures to see if any varices have developed; these occur as a result of portal hypertension when the liver becomes extremely scarred. If found in advance, these varices can be easily dealt with using band ligation; if left alone they can result in fatal hemorrhage. Hopefully they can manage his ammonia/encephalopathy more efficiently and get him back in one piece soon. Has he been evaluated for transplant at this point?
Good luck—
Bill
