How long goes genital herpes last?

Can anyone tell me how long genital herpes lasts? I have had an outbreak of four weeks. I took tablets for about 5 days at the beginning and thought it was gone. But it came back a few days later. I die nothing for the next few weeks - I would get a blister, then it would heal, then I would get another one a few inches away. A week ago I started on the tablets again, but they are still developing! How long can this last?
I am beginning to think that I have herpes, but also maybe in addition a rash. Anyone else have anything like this? My gynecologist told me we have to keep an eye on it and I should go back next week.
It all started after a round of antibiotics for a root canal problem. Thanks for any help.

At this point you need looked at to see if this is all herpes or not going on.  You've been on antibiotics so you may have a yeast issue going on too.

I have had it for several years now, just showed up at some point although I can't figure out really why. Probably had it in my system for some time. I have been tested for years and other infections and I don't have any. What medicines can be taken orally for this? Thanks.
