Domestic dog bite

Hello!

Someone's little dog bit me yesterday. It was a domestic dog on a leash, however I did not see the owner. I was wearing jeans, the skin was not punctured, so I got only a little red swelling and a bruise ~1cm in diameter.
Probably a trifle, but I'm still nervous about possible infections (i.e. rabies). There's no way to find the owner now.
I am currently living in Toronto, Canada, so I went to a walk-in clinic, where the doctor told me that since the skin was not punctured I'm alright.
I am mainly worried because in my country (Russian Federation), they give you shots almost in every such case (or so I heard).
What do you people think? Was the doctor right?

Did you squeeze the wound when you got bit? Did the doctor look at it with a magnifying glass? Was he sure the skin wasn't broken? If so then I wouldn't worry about it. Yes rabies can only be spread from the saliva of a animal to the open wound (blood) of a person or animal.
take care,

If the skin wasn't broken, i wouldn't worry about it.  Rabies can only spread by bodily fluids.  I think you are safe.
