Pain on the back of head and neck and right shoulder

My wife is having pain on the back of her head, neck and also on the right shoulder, sometimes extending up to the right arm for the past one week. The pain goes up sometimes and comes down after rest. She is a nursing mother of 1 year old baby. She had a similar episode in last June which went away by itself with some massage and fomentation, but without any medication.  We are worried whether it could be any way realted to a cervical disc problem. Please advice, if anyone has a similar experience.

Dear Dr. Santos,

Thanks for the info. We consulted doctor who said  it could be muscular. Prescribed analgesic tablets and muscle relaxant ointment (diclofenac). The pain has, now, receded. Hope it would go away without further medication.

Hi,
How is your wife? Are there other symptoms present? Neck and shoulder pain could indeed be due to musculoskeletal or neurological issues. She may benefit from imaging studies to rule out structural issues of the head or neck such as cervical disc problem. Have this checked by her doctor for proper diagnosis. Rest, pain medications and cold/warm compresses may also help. Take care and best regards.
