migraines for last couple months

Hi I have a question for any one that might can give me an answer.  I have been having headaches for the last 2 months .According to the ER doctor they are migraines. I go there get shot and go home it will ease off but end up going back within a week for another shot and I think they think that I am just playing or something.  Anyway I have had migraines before but only maybe once or twice a year.  But now it is like 1-3 times a week and it seems like it really doesn't go away it eases up to a dull ache but it comes back with a major pain and it gets to the point where It just see black dots, and I am dizzy alot, and throw up.  I have been to my family doctor yesterday, he prescribed me topamax, and gave me a hot of something.  I have taken one yesterday and one today can't tell that they are working just makes me feel weird and have a headache almost like a hangover.  Do you think I should try to see a Neurologist or just take this med. and see what happens.

Hi,

You need to talk to your physician and ask him/her to refer you to a neurologist.

Also tell him/her that you do not have insurance. A proper clinical evaluation by a certified neurologist is essential with the symptoms you describe.

Topiramate helps in preventing the attacks but does not help once an attack has started.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

I have been taking over the counter meds. Excedrin Migraine, Aleve, Ibuprofen. They did a Ct scan at the hospital and said it was ok but I still keep having the headaches. I go from a dull ache to a throbbing pain that makes me dizzy and see spots, and throwing up.  I have had an eye exam and it is the same as last year about 3 months ago.  I do not have any insurance and would be self pay will a neurologist see me this way?

Hi Karein,

Have a neurologist see you so that a complete neurologic exam be made. It is important also to have your eyes and sinuses checked just to rule out any underlying problems. A migraine is usually given as a diagnoss if other problems have been ruled out.

Do not stop or taper the Topamax until your physician has advised you to do so. Before doing anything ,inform your physician. Migraines may transform into chronic daily headaches due to prolonged analgesic use or other factors.Have you been taking any analgesics for greater than 3 months ?

A classification of your headache will help since headaches may be managed in different ways. Keep us posted for anything.
