Ca-125

Hello,
I have a 8.5cm hemorrhagic cyst/possibly endometrioma, on my right ovary. I am waiting for a surgery date but my doctor sent me for a Ca-125 blood test. I know that it is an ovarian cancer test but i am not sure if this is a routin testing before the surgery or if i should be worried about why he sent me for this test. I would really like to know more about is since i am constantly thinking about it now and stressing out.
Thank you.

Hi stellag. I too had a CA125 blood test and mine came back quite high at 71 (normal is under 35). I also had another tumour marker blood test come back higher than normal. Of course I was convinced from that day on that I had cancer. I had two large complex ovarian cysts and I had to wait 3 months before they finally operated on me to know for sure whether or not I had cancer. Ended up being endemetriosis not cancer. Endemetriosis can affect the CA-125 blood test as can benign ovarian cysts and other ailments. I know it is hard but looking back I was a basket case for nothing. The odds are truly in your favour. Usually this test is just done to help let the gynecologist know whether your cysts are going to go away on their own or whether they will need to be surgically removed but not really to screen for cancer.

Good luck !

Hi stellag.  I too had a C-125 test today and am awaiting the results, which should be in on Monday.  I can understand your worries and anxiety.  I am scheduled for a laparotomy on July 10th to remove a 10+ cm complex ovarian mass, tubes and ovaries.  I too understand how you feel.  Hang in there.....

Dont worry at all.

I was asked to do this test with a dozen other blood tests, ECG and Xray. It is just to rule out cancer as a safety measure. Even I was stressed and drained for the 24hrs while I waited for its result. The result was normal and there was no cancer. I got my laparotomy done last friday and got my cyst (15.8 cms) removed.

Do update me!
