Normal after surgery?

Hi everyone,

I had my surgery on Friday (Laparoscpy/Hysteroscopy) and I am wondering if it is normal for me to feel so weak and ill today still. I am dizzy (not on any meds) have visual disturbances, feel unsteady and extremely shaky and weak. Also those air bubbles are really bothering me. It is reallly bad when I stand up and walk around. Feels like there is an aur bubble trapped in my diaphram or under my heart b/c when my heart beats I can feel air in there and it hurts. They did implant a Mirena (IUD) so I am wondering if my dizziness and weakness is from that perhaps. Also I have no appetite and can't eat much b/c when I do eat it feels like I am going to explode, maybe from all of the air in there. My arms and legs are so incredibly weak and it scares me. Is this normal?

I haven't gotten my final results from surgery yet but the doc said that everything looked "normal" and that he removed a large cyst with a fibroid adnoma and a lot of endometriosis.

Is what I'm feeling normal? Can the Mirena cause this?

Thank you,

Jenny

Hi Jenny,
I just found your post and it seems that I am going through right now what you went through in November.  I had left endometrial cyst and left ovary removed, and right endometrial cyst removed.  It was an inpatient 2 night stay 2 wks ago.  they put the Scopolamine patch behind my left ear prior to surgery, same thing, they said it was for nausea.  But I don't have any history of nausea or problems with anesthesia.  The next morning after surgery I realized my vision was bad, blurry up close.  I couldn't even read a magazine.  Told the nurse and she removed the patch, said that probably caused it.  I was still dizzy and blurry vision when I went home the next day but I tolerated it bc I figured it was a combination of all the stress my body was under.  Well, the vision problem STILL has not gone away.  Docs don't know what is wrong.  They sent me to a neuro.  I am having a MRI tomorrow.  I have trouble sitting on the computer for more than 1 hr. Bright light is not tolerated, have to wear sunglasses and hat to go outdoors, can't drive, can hardly stand to ride in a car, have to keep eyes closed most of the ride.  Tonight I noticed eyelids shake when I try to hold my eyes closed one at a time.  Its as if my eyes are totally weakened by whatever it is.  Did your eyes ever recover?  Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thank you,
Carla

Hi everyone,

Today the shortness of breath and pain are better but the dizziness and foggy head are still here. I have not had an appetite and didn't have one prior to surgery either so that isn't a shocker at all. I am thinking that this might be a reaction to the Mirena IUD. My body seems to overreact to everything, especially hormones so I am getting this out in the morning. I hope that this brain fog goes away, I know hormones can wreck havok on your body. My nausea is really bad too....ugg, maybe it's my anxiety. I was in an udder uproar over this cyst that was on my ovary so I think I threw my body and nervous system into shock with all of the worrying. Thank you all for being here!!

I am really sorry that you are having problems. I would agree that if you have concerns you should at least call and make your surgeon aware...to see what they think about it. I just had my surgery on Oct 29th...and yes...it can be rough. I didn't have shortness of breath though. Bowels were a real problem for me. Stool softeners and laxatives as needed to keep things from getting too backed up. I didn't seem to have much of an appetite either for a while. For me...I did have the shoulder pain from the gas that they use...but I also had a lot of my own gas that was a pain...literally. Things are getting better for me...it is a slow process and when the ladies say to rest and do nothing but walk...they are not kidding. Please talk to your dr though...that is what they earn the big bucks for...they really should know what is going on with you. Take care and please let us know how you are doing. God bless...Lynn

You might want to try taking some Ovol or Gas X to break up the gas and try to walk around where it is safe and you won't fall.  Are you eating enough?  Your blood sugar might be out of whack if you aren't and you could be weak from a lack of nutrients.  Even if you're not hungry you have to get something in you.  Are you on any pain pills and possibly having reactions?  I really hope you start feeling a little normal shortly.

I'm glad you were in touch with your Dr. .Unfortunately I can't speak to any of those symptoms that you are having. I didn't even have the "gas" that is so painful for so many. But, I'd certainly keep an eye on that shortness of breath. I'm not a health care professional, but truly have not seen that addressed here .

The dizziness worries me also. When is your post op? Mine was in 1 week, but I had none of those symptoms. If they continue, I'd try to get in to see the Dr. before the scheduled post op..

Keep in touch,
Sandy

Jenny,
Did they give you an incentive spirometer to use? The little thingy that you blow into slowly? If they did make sure you are using it. Do you have numbness and tingling in your arms? Just wondering because anxiety is horrible and can cause alot of those symptoms... Oh kiddo, hope you are feeling better.... keep an eye on things and make sure you get in touch with the doc if you keep having the shortness of breath and other symptoms..... keep in touch with us too...

No I didn't mention the shortness of breath but I ended up in the ER on Sunday night b/c I felt like I was having a heart attack. They did an abdominal x-ray and CT scan of my lungs to make sure I didn't have any blood clots. All was fine except for my right lung was a little inflamed. I told the doc and she said that is normal from the air that is trapped in there, sometimes it can cause the lung to get inflammed. She said I will be fine but to keep in touch with her. The shortness of breath is scary too. I have always been one to have HIGH anxiety about EVERYTHING so this could be adding to it. I thought that the shortness of breath had to do with the surgery and being so weak??

Thank you for responding,

Jenny

Ok, I just saw your last comment about being short of breath.... That is not normal. You really need to call the doc back. It could all be anxiety related, but I wouldn't take the chance if I were you. There are many things that could cause this and he should really know about that. Did you tell him that when you spoke to him?

Oh Jenny....
I feel bad for you. Ok so lets look at all this. First off, have you taken the Scopolomine patch off? That absolutley can contribute to these symptoms and it shouldn't be left on for more than 48hrs. We use those alot at work in the recovery room to help people who are really susceptible to post op nausea and vomiting. Anesthesia in general can knock the living sh**t out of people for weeks following the surgery. The gas is one of the worst side effect of lap surgery. It can settle between your shoulder blades, make you feel like you are having a heart attack, which causes a little anxiety and makes everything feel worse. The weakness is probabably from the anesthesia, the dizzyness from the patch as well as the vision problem. I know it is not easy, but try and take short little walks in your house. This is absolutely the best thing for the gas. Try some warm drinks too.
Your appetite may take a little while to come back, since you're not doing too much, your not burning much calories and you need to rest too. How are you doing peeing and moving your bowels? Sometimes until the bowels start kicking in, the appetite is poor. I didn't have one for 2-3 weeks. That is soooo not normal for me.
This will all get better, but if something is really bothering you, and is concerning you, by all means call the doc back. That is what they are there for.
I hope you feel better soon sweetie.... I promise it will get better
Hugs from Boston

They are just weird, like my eyes are having a hard time adjusting to light changes and strange when I look at the computer. They gave me that patch before surgery behind my ear for nausea and my doc seems to think it might still be in my system or maybe it's just the stress of all of this on my body. I just feel very "off".

Thank you,
Jenny
