Ovaries and tube removal.

Ok so in 2012 I had a hysterectomy but they  left my ovaries and tubes in tact. I am nervous because Friday I go in it has my tubes and ovaries removed as well as thinning of scar tissue from my hysterectomy.  What do I need to expect as well as recovery since I have 3 kids under the age of 6. Also any information on different hormone replacement therapies would be much appreciated.

By 4 or 5 months post-op, I had lost over half my hair, it grayed in the front, I lost a lot of skin collagen and muscle mass causing saggy, old looking skin, and my vision blurred. I am sorry you are faced with this.

You must be fairly young since you have 3 kids under age 6. You did not mention the reason for this upcoming surgery to have the rest of your sex organs removed. Most surgeries to remove the uterus and/or ovaries are unnecessary. But more importantly, the ovaries have many health and quality of life functions. Every cell in the body needs them and they continue producing hormones into a woman's 80's for optimal physical, mental, emotional, and sexual health.

These functions became all too painfully apparent to me after my organs were needlessly removed at age 49 for a benign ovarian cyst. My gynecologist should have removed just the cyst and left all my organs. I developed a whole laundry list of issues (one being outward rapid aging), all of which are medically documented after-effects of ovary removal. I am on estrogen (and have tried various forms) which has helped but it has not returned me to my former self, personality nor appearance wise.

Be sure you understand the effects of this serious surgery, less than 2% of which are for confirmed cancer. If you have endometriosis, hysterectomy and ovary removal are not a cure. Many women continue with pelvic pain after having their organs removed.

I hope you find this helpful.
