Ovarian cyst no ovary

Hi all, I am new here. Just trying to figure some things out. I am 52 post menopausal. Ovaries have been gone for about 5 yrs. I have been having frequent UTI's the past few months. The Dr did an ultra sound on my kidneys then a CT and found a cyst on my left ovary. He was a little surprised when I told him that I had not had that around for quite awhile. I have been to the gyno and he has confirmed this. I am waiting on results of CA125 but the dr thinks it is just a simple cyst and if the CA125 is negative just watch it. My concerns are the fact that I have an ovarian cyst with no ovary. And that I am being tested for ovarian cancer. HOW CAN THESE THINGS HAPPEN after a Hysterectomy? ANY IDEAS LADIES?????????????? I am waiting.........

If you google ovarian remnant syndrome you will see that others have had it.  It is not a usual occurence but does happen.

Hi TrudieC, I had both of my ovaries removed in 2004. I was having some UTI problems when this cyst was found by my urologist. I have been to my gyno, he has ran the CA125, it came back with a 5.5 level. He wants to just wait till my next annual exam and do another ultra sound. I was having no symptoms other than the UTI which I had been battling off and on for 4 or 5 months. I just had never heard of having an ovarian cyst when you no longer have ovaries. I don't know that I really see the full advantage to having them removed if you can still get cyst and have to worry about ovarian cancer. Double edged sword here somewhere. I would really like to know if any others have ever had this problem or even heard of it.

When you had your hysterectomy did they specifically indicate they were removing your ovaries?  A normal hysterectomy does not include ovary removal and many women believe it does.  If they did remove them it is possible that a remnant was left behind which grew back.

Do you know what size your cyst is?  Testing for CA125 is pretty common with cysts although it is not a reliable indicator.  It can be raised if you have endometriosis, an infection, or just because you have a cyst and can even not be high if cancer is involved.  It is normally used after a diagnosis of ovarian cancer to monitor the disease.  However, doctors do use it just to know if there is reason for concern.

Over 95% of all cysts are benign so your odds are very good.  Especially since your cyst is causing you symptoms (many women think they have a UTI but it is the cyst pressing on their ureter) and since you are post menopausal I wouldn't wait more than a couple of months to watch it.  If it were me I'd want it out for peace of mind.  Please keep us posted.
