Ovarian cysts

Hello.. I am experiencing pelvic pain and lower right back pain.. So i went to my doctor and she gave me a script for an US. The Midwife called me yesterday with the results leaving out some information and just saying everything is ok but i dont feel ok, here are my results, I have a 3.5cm cyst on my right ovary which contains nultiple internal small, mildly thick walled cysts and my left ovary contains a complex heterogeneous nodule which meaures 2.5cm.. Now is this something i should be worried about and look to another doctor for a second opinion or just act like the midwife and brush it off my shoulder,,, help please.. Also i have been having irregular periods and intercourse is painful..Will i have to get them removed??

So i saw My second opinion Doctor and first all she cant believe how i was treated by my first doctor. But she said she wants to remove the nodule  and biopsy it(she is not sure but thinks is may be endometreousis (?).. So I have one thing to say if you feel in your gut that the Doctor you are seeing is not being honest or making you feel like your pain is not what it really is. PLEASE go get a second opinion it's worth it..

I am sorry they are giving you the runaround.  I know how you feel.  I am there myself.  I am so glad that you are getting a second opinion.  In my experience they do not usually remove a cyst until  it is 5cm, OR causing pain.  Since it is causing you pain, I would request surgery to remove it, especially since it is complex.  Please let us know how  your appointment goes today!!  Good luck!

Well the thing that got me so mad is she (the midwife, i never even heard from the doc, how proffesional) called me and said everything looks fine except a cyst on your right ovary and i told her i was also having pain on the left side, did she see anything on the US for the left said she said NOPE everything looks good. So then i requested they fax me my test results, i look it over and see that on my left ovary i have the complex nodule (2.5cm) so i have my second opinion appointment today. I would like to just get them removed.. My friend told my that having a cyst as big as your ovary, if it would happen to burst first of all it is very painful and it could damage your ovary and even cause you to hemorrage.. Has anyone heard this before??

Yeah, I'm surprised they didn't at least recommend a follow-up ultrasound in 6 weeks.  I have a 3 cm complex cyst with a mural nodule on my right ovary and I have a follow-up ultrasound next Tuesday (6 weeks after initial) to check on it.  I'm nervous as heck.  I think you need to contact the doctor that ordered the test and see what he says.

Also, I've learned to go to medical correspondence a few days after every test I have and ask for my own copy of the reports.  By law, they have to release any medical info you ask for.  A lot of times, I end up having my own copy in my hand before I even see or hear from my doctor.  I hate being surprised--I like to know the results so I can prepare myself for what might be said!

Oh yeah,  I forgot to say, during this 6 week wait, I was also referred to a gyn-onc and saw him.  He wasn't too concerned about it (my regular ob-gyn is way more worried it than the gyn-onc) but he did recommended removing it.  I have my surgery scheduled for April 20th.

Complex cysts need to be investigated to rule out cancer.  Not saying it is, mind you.  It is rare, but more likely with complex cysts than with other types.

For piece of mind, and since you are in the USA in a city that should have this type of specialist:  ask to be referred to a gynecologist/oncologist.

If surgery is required, this is the only doctor you want to have performing it. They specialize in ALL types of cysts, benign or not, and any other abnormal development in the female reproductive system.  Or he/she may say no worries.  But that is the specialist you want to trust with a verdict.  Nobody else.
