Removing Dermoid cyst during pregnancy

I am 27 yrs old and have been recently diagnosed with a 6 cm dermoid cyst on my left ovary. i am 15 weeks pregnant. I have slight pain on the left lower abdomen. Its sort of a nagging pain and not continuously present.
I have consulted 2 doctors and only one of them has recommended surgery to remove the cyst. The other doctor wants to wait until delivery to operate. What should i do? Will surgery affect by baby in any way? is there a risk in waiting? What are the chances of a rupture or twisting?

Thanks

Hi,

I am 15 weeks 3 days pregnant, and last week i had laportomy (open surgery) to remove a tumour/cyst contained inside my right ovary.  I was 14 weeks and 4 days when it was removed. Recovery has been painful but bearable, I have took painkillers or morphine, but I did this for the baby.  I had a scan 2 days after surgery and the baby was showing to have strong heart beat, but I still hope the next couple of weeks are okay.  I am 6 days after surgery and each day gets easier to walk and move around, my staples came out today which was more of a relief.  I had a horizontal c section cut.

Hope all goes well for you

Hi I have a cyst on my ovary witch is 12cm, but I had this before I was pregnant. I av had pain every day witch I can deal with but I get this bad pain for about 20mins at a time where I cnt move walk or do anything. This is because it's twisting. I was booked in for a scan by my doctor but the day before I found out I was pregnant, the nxt day I found out I had the cyst. I'm now 13 weeks pregnant and I'm scared I have to have the op but I want to know from some1 that has been through the same and weather the baby has been ok please :( xx

Hi,

I currently have a 7cm suspected dermoid cyst, it was originally 10cm in November they thought it was a hemmoraghic cyst and drained it, but 6 weeks later is was showing completly solid on a scan, I was booked in for laportomy on 11th January, only to find out I was 6 weeks pregnant (totally shocked after trying for years & years)
My operation was cancelled, and I was half disappointed because I was so worried about what it could be, they think its a dermoid, but I am worried about cancer.  Anyhow I am due to have it removed in 2 weeks, when I will be 14.5 weeks pregnant, by Laportomy, I am worried about the incision, my belly growing on the incision, losing the baby and then results of pathology.  My Gyno has said although there are risks, he cannot give percentages and all the operations he has done in his 30 yrs of operating on pregnant women they have all been fine.  He said its okay to have the anesthestic, morphine and pain meds, the actual risk is the trauma to the stomach, as operating so close to the womb, they have to keep it still as possible and keep away from it, but thats quite difficult when the ovary is right next to it!

It nice to hear other pregnant ladies surgery has gone okay.  Good look to you, Yvonne xxx

Hi there...wow there seems to be alot of us girls going through the same thing.  I have commented on someone elses question with similar circumstances but I would like to comment to you aswell in case you don't see the other one.
Back in 2005 I learned i had 2 ovarian cysts just prior to finding out I was pregnant at that time they were both roughly about 4cm, took the wait and see approach but they continued to grow to the point they were about 5 and 6 cm I was scheduled for surgery but found I was pregnant so it was cancelled. Throughout first trimester I had numerous u/s to monitor growth only to realize they were growing quite rapidly they began to believe they may have been cancerous and there was also the worry of twisting or rupture. They got to be about 12 and 10 cm (can't remember exact sz)  I had extreme abdominal pain with walking.   They scheduled me for surgery just 2 days later Dec. 23rd '05 at 16wks . Some of the pain I was experiencing was due to one cyst rupturing. Anyway I awoke to good news-No Cancer and baby was doing fine!!!!  Had a healthy baby boy in June '06.
Once again...I am 9wks pregnant now and have learned I have 2 cysts one being 3.3cm and the other 4.7cm. Still relatively small I await to see how the dr's will handle it this time, as I am now living in a different province. I will be requesting for another u/s to monitor for growth. I believe the best time for surgery while pregnant is 16-20wks.  I already have alot of pain if I do to much but I am on bedrest until I hit the 12th wk now due to bleeding and cramping due to a believed partial miscarriage, so I am not entirely sure if the pain is due to the cysts or not.
I'm not sure what the chances of twisting, torsion or rupture are but I do believe they are higher the bigger the cyst and I know my dr's the first time round were concerned about the cysts putting pressure on the baby.
I hope this helps some. Just try to be positive, and take it easy. This site is a great source of comfort and information I wish I had found it when I was going through it the first time.
Thinking of you and best wishes.

I think these are questions you really need your doctor(s) to answer.  I'm sure there are risks either way for you and we have had some women come through here who had successful removals during their pregnancies.  I think there is a risk of rupture and twisting and also if the cyst gets too big it might interfere with the pregnancy.  On the related expert forum for ovarian cancer (below right) do a search on cysts in pregnancy and there are some answers from doctors there that might help you decide.
