50 is not impossible.  Talk to the doctor about the pain and immediately get on one of the really serious weight-loss programs.  My husband lost 30 lbs. in four months on Weight Watchers a few years ago.  It really is possible.  I'm sure they would do the surgery if you were only 20 lbs overweight.

A few questions:

How many pounds would you have to lose in order for the doctor to do the surgery?  If it is a reasonable number, is there an emergency weight-loss plan you could try?

What surgery is your doctor refusing to do?  Fibroid removal or a partial hysterectomy?

Based on your comment that you don't want any more kids, are you saying that you don't mind having a partial hysterectomy to remove the problem?

I'd say to ask another doctor, but if your weight issue is very great, another doctor might say the same thing that this one says.  When a person is very heavy, surgery gets more complicated (and dangerous to the patient.)  If that is the case, I would consider the weight to be a more serious problem to you than even the fibroid, and go onto one of the more strict weight-loss programs, even if it is costly.  In other words, I'd treat the weight as the medical emergency, since it is blocking you from removing the painful fibroid.  You certainly don't want to go into a surgical situation that is dangerous to you.

On the other hand, if the weight is not to the level that every doctor would consider it dangerous to you in surgery, then do talk to a different doctor.

Also, speak to a doctor about pain control.  You are in a situation right now where you risk getting hooked on pain killers, which is a terrible outcome all of itself.

Another possibility, though I suppose it sounds flaky, is to talk to an acupuncturist who specializes in women's issues.  The acupuncturist might be able to get you through the painful wait while you lose the pounds, without opiates that could cause an addiction.

Good luck, honey.  It's probably time to address the pounds anyway, this just gives a much more serious twist to it.
