laparotomy

Hi, I am 65 years old.and  had a hysterecomy 20 years ago.
An  ovarian cyst has been found on my left ovary.I had an ultrasound scan, and awaiting  Cat scan. I have been told that I will have a laparotomy op, -large incision, and may have both ovaries removed.
My c125 blood test showed a reading of 7.They told me thats fine, but need to rule out any other problems.
I did feel very panicky as I was told it would be keyhole surgery, originally, JUST TO REMOVE THE CYST.
How long should Istay in hospital, and what is the recovery tiome for this op.

Thanks Trudie, i did  have open surgery with hysterectomy, i am awaiting Cat Scan to see if i need one or 2 ovaries out and checking for other things, due to my age.
I am priveledged now as a senior.I didnt find the hysterectomy painful really, just  sore, and had to be soooooooooo careful.
After a month i started to feel better,  and started driving after 5 weeks, but i think full recovery takes up to a year,
many thanks A

How long you stay in hospital depends on where you live, insurance, and your doctor.  I live in Canada and I was in for 5 days but I have heard of others in for as little as 2.  Did you have open surgery for your hysterectomy?  The recovery time is very similar.

I found a lot of pain for the first 2.5 weeks.  Hugging a pillow really helped and very important to stay on top of your pain meds.  My pain started reducing then and felt much better by the 4 week mark.  It is so important that you just rest, leave the housework, lifting, twisting, and not overdo it.  A little walking is good to break up the gas.

Good luck to you and please let us know how it goes.
