Remember, pentazocine is a partial opiate agonist, meaning that it works against full agonists like hydrocodone.
These medications should never be taken together.
What are agonists, partial-agonists, and antagonists? Good source of information for any pain patient on COT. Please look them up.
I just saw your response. Sorry I am tardy.
Talwin shows up as an opiate on a drug screen. I've not heard of it showing up as a benzo. I've done some searching and all sites say the same. It shows as an opiate..
Hope this helps.

I was asking about how it showes up in a urine test because i had a round tabke dissection with some of my medical friends and i thought it showed up as a benzo. I worked in surgery for 12 years. Anywho,
I like my hydrocodone but im hateing tramadol er. Before going to pm Drs i was being treated by my GP for 10 yrs of my pain managment. I was on tramadol short acting and hydrocodone. I alternated them through out the day. Wel my PM DR wont keep me on two short trem pain meds. I dont think the tramadol er is as effective as the regular. So I'm looking to talk to my PM Dr about next step up. Im not comfortable with fentanyl cuz its so strong and have to bite the bullet and so a med switch to something diffrent for a med break. Just looking at all my options.
Hello Again Purrm,
Talwin is the brand name for Pentazocine which is an opioid pain medication. It will most certainly "show up" in a drug test as an opiate. Why do you ask?
Talwin can be very effective for some ppl. As we discussed earlier it depends on each person's system. Frankly I've never been prescribed Talwin so I cannot comment from personal experience.
I have extreme, long time chronic pain. I've been on all the meds you mentioned (accept Talwin). In all honesty Norco (Hydrocodone) is the most effective short acting medication for my pain. Other ppl will disagree with me, again that's because we all react differently to different medications.
I have given patients Talwin (in my past nrsg career) that found good pain relief. It is an older opiate and I don't see it prescribed very often.
Hope this helps.
Take Care,
Tuck
