risperidone &tardive dyskinesia in child

my son, 9 , was taking risperidone 1mg BID. he has missed his doses for 2 days and now came home from summercamp with signs of tardive dyskinesia. Is this because of stopping the risperidone or has the risperidone been masking the tardive dyskinesia ?

Hi there.  Yes, completely agree.  Withdrawel dyskinesia can happen when risperidone is stopped quickly.  You want to tell your doctor immediately.  They can go away over time but could take a while.  Tardive dyskinesia is a bit different and may not go away.  Definately give your doctor a call about this situation.

Obviously, be religious about giving that medication at the appropriate time each day.   If he does eventually discontinue it, a very slow taper is best.

good luck.  Always frightening as a parent.  peace
