What is YOUR best memory of the holidays? It can be recent, it can be old...it can be a gift or a special vacation your family took....
what do you remember with the biggest smile?
Aside from the obvious answer that the last few years since my kids were born have been the MOST amazing Christmases, I remember growing up we were SO poor some years (my parents are artists) and some years we had money...some years I would get whatever I wanted, and then some years nearly nothing; one year I got a single pack of socks. some hershey kisses in my stocking, and a pack of socks, because that's all we could afford.
well, one year, I got a book on Christmas eve, and then woke up to find the tree completely bare. There was candy in my stocking, but only one little white box (not a jewelry box)....my heart fell (I was 11) but I knew my parents always did their best, so I didn't say anything. I took my time getting to the box knowing that I was going to have to pretend to be grateful and not act disappointed, so finally when I had steeled my nerve I got the box and opened it, telling myself over and over "they did the best they could, don't be sad, don't be sad"......
well I opened it, and there was a single piece of paper in it. My heart was broken at this point and I was nearly in tears...I unfolded the paper and it said..... "Congratulations. for the next year, you are the proud owner of your very own horse! -Love, M & D" (I rode horses competatively at this point in my life and had been for YEARS)....I stood there in shock, then started screaming and jumping and crying. they had leased me my very own horse which had been my dream growing up...it was a wonderful Christmas.
best gift ever :-). (Aside from my babies ;-) ) .
and there was also the year that my cousins and I put on a nativity show...I was Mary and my teddy bear was Baby Jesus....I cried when they tried to take Baby Jesus from me (I was probably 5) and my two dogs served as the shepherds' flock, lol.
