Hello, I’m a healthy male in his 50’s that was diagnosed with ureaplasma about six months ago. Symptoms include mild urethra burning when urinating, initially there was a very slight discharge but that seems to have resolved. There is often a mild sense of pain / discomfort in the urethra. I went to two clinics for testing (you name it, I’ve been tested for it) and everything came back normal. Despite this I ordered an at home test from “Let’s Get Checked”. I think the test name was “The Big 10”, meaning they test for the 10 most common STIs. It was this test that was positive for ureaplasma. With that I saw a urologist who has treated me with doxycycline 100mg 2x daily. His opinion is that a very large percentage of the population has this infection and it makes up the normal flora in most men and women even stating that in all likelihood he probably had it (I thought that was humorous). Anyway, he showed me an article from Johns Hopkins urology that encouraged no treatment for ureaplasma. He’s done numerous tests - both blood and urine and everything always comes back negative. Still on doxy and I get the impression that this is intended to ease my mind more than providing a cure for something many physicians feel is not worth treating. I’ve read a ton about ureaplasma in these ensuing months and these articles range from ignore it to the end of the world as we know it. Bottom line is I’d be OK with letting it resolve over time if that was the end of it but if this is serious I don’t want to be responsible for spreading it around. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
