Medical Records disclosures

Hi,

I am over 18 years old, and I know that I have the right to NOT consent to providing anyone (ex: my parents) access to my medical records. There are some medical procedures/office visits that I have done that I do not want my doctor or the hospital to share with my parents but there are some that I don't mind my doctor/hospital share with them. Can I do this? Can I ask the hospital to restrict disclosures of only some of my medical records? Can I do this ahead of time, before I go to the hospital with my parents? And will my parents know that I am restricting some of my records from them  (cuz if they know, they will definitely be very angry with me)?

Help?

Hello,

thank you for your comment. Actually I am not covered under my parents' insurance. I am covered by my employer's insurance...

Maybe i am being paranoid because i am not 100% sure that my parents will ask for my medical records, but just want to cover all the bases in case they do...

The other issue is, if you have been covered by your parents insurance, there will be billing codes they will receive that will reflect treatments and visits.

In theory, yes. In practice no. The clerks will not take the time to do this with records that may end up in the hundreds of pages, with referrals, treatments and medications interleaved. What you can do is have your medical records printed up and remove some of the pages, but histories are often co-mingled and you would end up with an F.B.I. type document with blackouts. On the other hand I see no reason why they have to see the records and not rely upon your word as to your medical problems, with you giving permission to a specific physician to speak with them about a specific problem only if asked.
