Problems with memory

Hi,

My name is Mike, and I'm 15 years old.

For the past few years I have been experiencing memory problems. I don't forget serious things like names, just small things like homework, things I've said a few days before, even things I ate on the same day sometimes.

The thing is, these things just don't come into my head- for example, if I'm set homework at school, I can remember it on the way home, but if anything else happens to distract me from thinking about it, the thought just goes and I can't remember to do my homework- I don't even remember to check. It just doesn't come into my head. Of course, this seems like a stupid excuse but it really isn't, I just can't remember things.

Another example is not remembering things from 2 days before. I can't remember what I ate or what I did on that day without thinking hard about it. Sometimes, days just seem to merge and I get confused about what I did on certain days.

I also have frequent headaches . Most of the time it is at the back / centre of my head. I can't recall things very well when I have these headaches.

I get 8 - 10 hours of sleep a night, only less than that on rare occasions.

Is this a normal thing for teenagers to experience?

If you need any more information, please ask and I'll be happy to provide it.

Thanks in advance for your time.

(Oh, and of course, I didn't post this before because I forgot to. How ironic.)

Hi Mike,
I also would not have worried about your forgetfullness, unless you mentioned about your recurring head ache. I think, you should  check up with a doctor and ensure that your head ache is harmless.

I'm 16 (turning 17 next month), and I also have the same memory problems you're having. My guess is that it's stress from school, your schedule, and personal life b/c the middle school/high school part of your life is very busy and stressful. ADD might also have a part in your memory problems. You had mentioned that you forget things like homework if you get distracted. My suggestion would be to have your self tested for ADD, buy a planner to write everything down in, and try eating fish. Fish is supposed to be really good for your memory. The planner might help you remember something if you physically write it down; You can also check your planner for homework.

I would buy a daily planner/notebook to write down what you need to do for schoolwork. A lot of people have trouble remembering everything they have to do, especially if you have a busy schedule. It's normal and happens to many people. I always write things down. I have notes on my desk about special things I need to do so I don't forget. I wouldn't worry about, as stress won't help your situation. Just try to keep organized and get what you need to do done. Good luck
