It's too late and you will lose the nail. You have to do this procedure a short time after the injury. The window of opportunity is short. Once the blood solidifies and forms a clot it won't come out the hole.

There is a nail, and a "bed" of tissue. The heated implement doesn't actually touch a pain sensitive body part. The nail itself has no sensation. It just goes through the nail. There is a layer of blood between the "nail" and the "bed". You want to go down just enough to open the nail and expose the blood.

This is helpful if you hit your finger with a hammer, for example.

It sounds yucky, but it's absolutely painless.

I hope your finger is feeling better.

The drill is when you smash the finger you have to let the blood out. This is scarey, but painless. You take a needle or pin and heat it red hot and sizzle through the middle of the nail, but NOT into the bed. The you gently press and the blood will come out. Otherwise you will always lose the nail. You can also use a dental drill, or a small model drill, but the heated pin is the best way. You have some tissue damage, and have to look for infection. I would have an R.N. or a physician's assistant look at it. If you can find a sober physician who hasn't stepped off a spacehip, that might also be appropriate.
