I have been diagnosed with poly cystic kidney disease for 10 years now. Both kidneys have large cysts, as long as 3 inches. At the report of this problem, I had never experienced pain from the cysts. When I experienced the pain, I had just gotten out of bed one morning and had taken only one step when the excruciating pain rang through my body. The previous night I had sleep on a different mattress. Possibly the new positioning of my body within this new mattress caused tightening of the muscles in the area of the cyst. That seem like the likely explanation. I raised the issue of the spinal fluid as an irritant because I have a PV shunt that empties cervical-spinal fluid in the region of the stomach on the left side. Since the right side signals no pain, I thought the fluid might have cause the kidney to become sensitive. I have had the PV shunt for 5 years, with it never having cause any problems. This was a mystery. Muscle tightening in the area of the inflamed cysts is probably the cause. Thanks to the community. All had reasonable answers.
Flank pain does not always indicate cancer. However, if you believe you might have cancer then you need to see your doctor immediately. Flank pain can be caused by many different problems. Unfortunately I have never heard of spinal fluid irritating cysts on a kidney mainly because the spinal fluid is contained in the spine. If it is spinal fluid causing the irritation, then you have a major problem and should seek medical attention immediately. If you have a cyst on your kidney I would assume that you have regular medical check ups and you should bring up your concerns to your physician at your next appointment. I hope this helps and that you get the answers you are seeking soon. Good luck.
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
A flank pain is almost always diagnostic of a kidney stone or cyst or any kidney infection until otherwise proved. It can also be due to muscle pull or a pinched lumbar spinal nerve. If you have been diagnosed with a cyst then this could have got twisted or there could be some other problem. Please consult your nephrologist.
It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Question
Dr. Falkinburg, I am a chiropractor and i have a patient with a single large renal cyst. Briefly,...He originally came to me for low back pain. He would get relief with chiropractic adjustments and modalities but he would continue to have relapses. He started to have pain in to his abdominal region so i referred him for to a urologist for follow up and an MRI. This is when we found the kidney cyst. He has been to two different urologists and they tell him he should not get pain with his cyst and they have offered him no form of treatment other then pain meds. Can renal cyst cause low back pain in your opinion and would the size of the enlarged kidney create a space occupying lesion. In other words cause pressure in the surrounding lumbar spine and pelvis muscles (ie. ileopsoas)and nerves. He experiences immediate relief with adjustments and even more relief with myofascial release of quadratus lumborum and ileopsoas. Heat and e-stim also help relieve his pain symptoms. I have seen a similar problem in my female patients with ovarian cysts... when their lower back muscles get tight that have severe pain if the cysts are near these muscles. If the enlarged kidney is irritated by the tight muscles or visa versa is their any treatments you would suggest as a means to shrink or resolve this kidneys cyst.Hope this helps.
