Wow, I am shocked to see how many people here have the same exact thing I have been experiencing for the past few years. I'm mid-30s female with no children. It happens only at night in bed, sometime it will wake me up, but usually it's just as I've woken up to get a drink, use the restroom, etc. It comes on so suddenly, and I'm just incredibly freezing. I'm shaking so hard my teeth rattle, I have goosebumps, and I just have to pile on blankets or robes and lie as still as possible, just shaking. I usually stay this way until I fall asleep. The feeling of coldness is so deep in my bones it literally hurts. I can go from a perfectly comfortable sleep in a normal temp room, to suddenly so freezing I'm shivering uncontrollably. It happens once every few months, and I can't find anything to connect it to. I do have Type 1 diabetes and Crohn's disease, but I don't know how these would relate. I'm just amazed there are so many other people out there with this exact issue. Maybe one day we'll know what's happening to us.
1. Severe feeling of being cold as the main symptom (when it's not cold in the room and there is NO reason for being cold like just getting out of the shower)
2. Chills, shaking, shivering as the second most severe symptom
3. Joint aches
Also....
4. Always happens between late evening and midnight (ie right before bed)
5. Cold feeling does not subside after putting 2 or more comforters on.
6. Only ends when you eventually fall asleep and then you just feel drained in the morning
7. No anxiety, loss of consciousness or memory, or any other neurological symptoms
8. Doesn't happen very often but has been going on for years
9. Rarely take medication
10. Almost never gets sick
Yes, I have been having these same attacks for over 12 years now. Always in the evening or during the night - it never happens once I am asleep
The shivering continues even if I am in a very hot bath. The joint aches are so severe that it fulls as though I am pulled limb from limb and involve a fair amount of body contortions without my being able to control it. The shaking is so severy that I cannot stand up straight or hold anything in my hands.
The attacks happen so sporadically and seem to have no relation to food, stress etc. Sometimes 6 months will go past without one and then I will be hit with 2 in a row. Lately, I have noticed a bad headache while the attacks are taking place and nausea which does sometimes lead to actually being sick.
I have had complete blood work tests - all negative. I have been tested for Malaria, thyroid problems and aneamia - all negative.I am very healthy otherwise and this is probably why the doctors are't too worried - I just feel I am getting older and I don't know if my body can take the strain of these indefinitely.
Any clues you have would be hugely appreciated.

I take Atenolol and experience the chills too. However, I've taken the Atenolol for a year and only started having the chills about 3 months ago so I'm not sure if they're related, although I've suspected they are.
