First time poster here. I'm glad such a forum exists. TIA for any and all replies. I plan to update this thread as my story continues to unfold.
I am a 44 year old healthy male. No prior history of disease or STI's. Since we are talking about the groin I will mention I had a hernia operation at age 14 and vasectomy at age 32. I don't think this is relevant but just in case.
Approximately 4 months ago I received unprotected oral sex from a new unknown partner (not a prostitute, but a stranger to me). A week or 2 later, I started experiencing the following symptoms:
-groin itch/discomfort/pain (specifically the area directly above the penis (a few inches below the belly button)
-flu type symptoms including:
-headache
-fever/chills
-night sweats
-achy muscles
-fatigue and malaise
Of course I started googling everything I could, and the first thing I thought of was that I had HIV. To all the people out there reading this, flu type symptoms are common with many many conditions and it usually isn't HIV.
Week 3 or 4 - I experienced a few days of a heavy and swollen feeling in one of my testicles. That feeling has since went away. Mild flu symptoms persist with the headache being the worst.
Week 8 or 9 - I started experiencing heart palpitations. Mild flu symptoms persist.
Week 14 - I tell my girlfriend about everything and we both get tested for STI's. She has no symptoms and did not test positive for anything.
I still have mild flu symptoms and pain in my groin area. All STI test negative. I believe I am far enough in that my HIV diagnosis is accurate.
Doctor does an EKG in regard to heart palpitation concerns - all appear normal, although I could tell my heart rate was normal during the test.
Week 15: I find this forum and start reading. Lots of scary stuff, but I learn about Bacterial Prostatitis and it seems to ring true to my experience.
Week 15: Went back to my doctor and shared my new 'theory' with him. He did a prostate exam which seemed normal with only a tiny bit of discomfort. He also took a urine sample to take some tests and I am being referred to a urologist. (Possibly unrelated note but I also discussed the possibility with my doctor that I have have contracted mono as the girl I was with was mid 20's - he dismissed this saying men my age don't/can't get mono, which I know is incorrect - should I get a second opinion on this? The flu symptoms have persisted for many many weeks already)
My doctor also prescribed 20 days worth of doxycycline in case it actually is Bacterial Prostatitis. I understand that 20 days won't be nearly enough either, it will probably be more like 60 days or more.
Anything else I should do here as things unfold? Ultrasound? Testing for Prostate Cancer, etc? Testing my blood for bacteria?
If I do have a bacterial infection, I am quite worried about the possibility of this spreading to my blood. How likely is this? Some web sources claim this can be fatal.
How would I know if this was happening? My heart palpitations worry me. Originally I had been reading about gonorrhea spreading to the blood and affecting heart valves etc. I assume this is all the same risk with just a different bacteria strain.
I'll add to this thread as I know more.
