Continuing Mild Urination Pain

Several months ago I had unprotected sex-the first time ever for this 40 year old man.  Immediatly after ejaculation I felt some burning and need to urinate.  A day or two later there was one incident of severe burning and need to urinate for just an hour or two.  The pain  subsided, but being cautious I went to Planned Parenthood where they did a "cursory urinalysis" (dipped the paper strip into the urine and checked the color change).  The Dr. said based on the above narrative and urinalysis, she assumed Clymidia, and treated me with two single dose antibiotics.

I continued to have very mild pain so went to a GP. Who did the swab test, and also treated me with a 10 day course of antibiotics.  The tests then came back negative for both Clymidia, and Ghonoreeha.

Now, 2 months after the unprotected intercourse, 1 month after the 10 day antibiotic treatment. I continue to have the same symptoms: a tickling feeling in my urethra during arousal resulting in quicker-than-before orgasm, brief and mild burning after ejaculation, and mild burning during urination.

Questions: Any ideas what this could be.  Should I see a urologist or would a GP be able to further diagnose this?

Hi,

"Trichomoniasis can usually be cured with prescription drugs, either metronidazole or tinidazole, given by mouth in a single dose. The symptoms of trichomoniasis in infected men may disappear within a few weeks without treatment. However, an infected man, even a man who has never had symptoms or whose symptoms have stopped, can continue to infect or re-infect a female partner until he has been treated. Therefore, both partners should be treated at the same time to eliminate the parasite. Persons being treated for trichomoniasis should avoid sex until they and their sex partners complete treatment and have no symptoms. Metronidazole can be used by pregnant women.

Having trichomoniasis once does not protect a person from getting it again. Following successful treatment, people can still be susceptible to re-infection."

Clean catch urine is centrifuged and the sediment is examined for the organism.

Thanks Dr. Mathews.  Gonna make an appointment Monday.

Is a test of some kind required for a definitive diagnosis, or is it OK if they just treat me with  metronidazole under the assumption that its Trichomoniasis.

Thanks again!

Hi,

Infection with Trichomonas can cause the symptoms you have described. This may or may not be accompanied with a change in the color and odor of the semen.

Treatment for Trichomoniasis involves metronidazole (an antiprotozoal agent).

Seeing a GP would do if you can discuss that your symptoms match that of trichomoniasis and can go in for the treatment with metronidazole.

Do keep us posted on your doubts and progress.
