Painful lump on shaft of penis

I am 19 years old and I have not had sexual intercourse. My whole life, I have had a small lump directly under the shaft of my penis, up near the head. It almost looks like a mole underneath the skin. It was not an irregular color and it never hurt or bothered me.

A few days ago, the lump turned a slight reddish color began to start hurting, and has now grown to the size of a pea or small pebble. It is bright red, and if I apply a lot of pressure to it, the lump hurts really bad and a tiny amount of yellow pus will come out from a tiny hole in the skin, which really freaks me out. Is this some sort of cyst, or possibly a swollen lymph node? I am worried that it might be something more serious, but I am praying that it will go away soon. Please help me!

Hi,

Yes, it means to cut the cyst out under local anesthesia. This type of anesthesia is where the doctor pokes a small needle about 0.5 - 1 cm under your skin and the anesthetic is injected slowly around the area that is supposed to be treated. You will not feel anything after the first ***** as the medicine will numb the area.

The cyst will have a wall similar to a capsule and this will need to be removed with the cyst so that the cyst does not fill again.

You can try the salactol initially, and if it does not work, you can always go to your GP.

Can the cyst wall be removed without surgery? According to a quick internet search, there are meds such as 'Salactol' that apparently eliminate the problem by slowly dissolving the skin area and allowing the new healing skin from below to surface. Also, they say using a heat pad for 10 minutes on the cyst 2 times a day for a while can cure it.

I would really like to slove this problem without surgery. I never liked the appearence of the small lump being there, and I don't want this problem recurring in the future. Doc, will one of these methods eliminate the cyst wall without surgery being required?

Thanks Doc, I really appreciate the info. Also, I am circumsized, forgot to mention that. What exactly does "excised under anesthesia" mean, does that basically mean surgery?

Hi,

Sorry that you had to go through all that alone.

It appears that you have had a sebaceous cyst on your penis for some time and the cyst may have become infected. From what you say there was a punctum (small hole) that may have been plugged with sebum and your squeezing it released the collection of pus and debris from inside and the inflammation has subsided.

The problem with sebaceous cysts is that they usually have a cyst wall in place and can keep recurring even after you drain them. The penis is so prone to complications of infection that it is better to have the cyst excised with the cyst wall under anesthesia and antibiotic cover. There is no urgency right now as the inflammation has subsided, but you will need to factor this in your health plan.

Ensure that you keep the area clean and avoid any collection of smegma under the foreskin.

Do keep us posted on any further doubts in this regard.

So yesterday I squeezed it, and this yellowish, seed-like lump popped out of a small hole in the skin. It looks like an apple pit and it's about the size of a sunflower seed. This REALLY creeped me out, but now the swelling has gone down a lot and doesn't hurt anymore. Was this a cyst, or what?
