Staphylococcus epidermidis

I had lithotripsy performed on my left kidney to treat some stones. I also had a stent placed. about 2 days after i had a high grade fever and was admited to the hospital. the cultures and urine showed Staphylococcus epidermidis which was treated with success with vanc and zyvox. i know S. epi. is a common skin flora but i am confused as to how i was infected. Any insight?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in. It is difficult to confirm what could have exactly caused the infection in you with S.epidermidis, but the possibilities include compromised immune system after surgery which manifested itself with high fever as you mentioned or due to the stent which was placed after surgery.
Do write to us if further information is required.
Best.

Yes I understand that information and understand the nature of the infection. What I dont understand is how I was Infected, how did it get in me? Was it possibly due to poor sterilization practices during the lithotripsy? Or was it possibly that I infected myself somehow? Thank you.

Hi,
How are you? S.epidermidis lives naturally on the skin and mucous membranes. It is now one of the most important agents of nosocomial infections especially in immuno-compromised individuals, neonates and patients with internal prosthetic devices. In these patients, the infection result from a compromise in both general and local defense mechanism, and inability to clear staphylococci from infected device because of a biofilm on the foreign body surface.
Hope this information helps.
