Teen girl with frequent UTI's

First off I'll start with her history. She was hositalized with pyelonephritis 2-05 in both kidneys, I believe the right was worse as far as CT shown. Then she saw nephorologist a couple of times and had kidney ultrasound because he said it wasn't very common for a 13 yr old to have actual pyelo.
Now she is 16 and for the past few months she has had a kidney\bladder infection of some sort every month. She has complained of back pain almost daily for several years.
She had to go to ER for severe abdominal pain Jan 12 treated for UTI (blood and WBC's in UA) given IV augmentin in ER then levaquin for 10 days orally (Jan 13-23) then rechecked urine Feb 5, still had blood and leukocytes again on oral antibiotics, Bactrim DS for 7 days. Now she went to Dr. 3-4 for cough\cold but while we were there she said her "side was hurting" so they did another UA which shown a "large amount of blood". So once again she is on bactrim DS. I called today to sch. an appointment with the uro. she saw in '05 but that it's for a month.
On a side note auto-immune problems run in our family and my daughter had a high ANA with some "weird" patten in 2004, actually both of my daughters had this and saw a rhumatologist a few times but have not had the blood work done lately could this have something to do with her UTI's?
So what I want to know is can there be some other underlying cause of these frequent infections and what test would be the best to get to the bottom of this?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Thanks for the input, for years they told my grandma she had lupus then before she passed they said "well were not sure may have been some other auto-immune problem" so my daughter has an appt with uro. and maybe we can get some answers simple or complex doesn't matter as long as I know it's not something worse than chronic UTI's. A friends daughter who is 17 just got dx. with auto-immune hepatits so things happen to teens too...which is terrible, but better to know now than later.
Thanks again!

Hi,

I was the same age as your daughter when I began having UTI and blood in my urine etc. I had several other symptoms/probems creep up as my teen years passed. It turned out that I have Lupus (SLE) and this is one of the things which is common with Lupus. She needs to see a highly accclaimed urologist  as well as a rheumatologist who is not afraid to say "lupus."  Do not panic. Lupus and many other auto immune diseases are not death sentences but life changes. In the mean time have her avoid caffein, acidic foods and drinks, drink water over all else and never put off voiding when she has the urge.
